Phaplu & Solu Trekking
Treks and approaches from Phaplu in green Solu — the EBC walk-in, Pikey Peak, Dudh Kunda, Numbur and the route to Lukla.
Phaplu is the green, low-altitude trailhead for some of the most rewarding — and least crowded — trekking in the Solu part of Solukhumbu. From this quiet Sherpa town you can launch the classic walk-in to Everest Base Camp, climb to a famous Everest viewpoint on Pikey Peak, loop the off-beat Numbur Cheese Circuit, pilgrimage to the sacred lake of Dudh Kunda, or simply wander the monasteries and apple-orchard villages of upper Solu. This collection gathers every trek and approach that begins around Phaplu, so you can match a route to your time, fitness and appetite for solitude.
Start with the destination overview in the Phaplu travel guide, then use the trek pins below to plan. For the bigger picture, lean on the national Everest region treks overview and the all-round Nepal trekking guide.
The big approaches
The headline route is the low walk-in to the Khumbu. Rather than flying straight into thin air at Lukla, you begin at Phaplu and walk north through Solu over several days — see our Phaplu to Everest Base Camp guide for the full staged route and acclimatisation logic. Many trekkers first join the trail at Lukla; our Phaplu to Lukla guide covers the four-to-five-day connecting walk over the Trakshindo La that links the two airstrips and forms the opening act of the classic approach.
Short scenic treks
If you have only a few days, the Pikey Peak trek from Phaplu is the standout — a short, non-technical ridge walk to a 4,065-metre summit whose sunrise panorama Sir Edmund Hillary is said to have ranked among his favourite views of Everest. It pairs naturally with the cultural country around Junbesi village, one of the loveliest Sherpa settlements in the whole region, and the contemplative retreat of Thubten Choling Monastery just up the valley.
Remote and sacred trails
For trekkers wanting genuine wilderness, the Numbur Cheese Circuit loops through high yak pastures and cheese-making kharkas beneath the white pyramid of Numbur, while the Dudh Kunda trek climbs to a milk-white glacial lake that is a major pilgrimage site each Janai Purnima. Both are quieter, harder and more self-sufficient than the ridge treks, and they reward the effort with raw scenery and living Himalayan culture.
Culture along the way
Solu's monasteries are part of every itinerary here. The cliffside Chiwong Monastery above Phaplu is the spiritual heart of the area and the stage for the spectacular autumn Mani Rimdu festival, a multi-day celebration of masked Cham dances. Visiting one or two gompas en route turns a trek into a fuller encounter with Sherpa Buddhism.
Plan it well
Whatever you choose, time your trip with the dry, clear seasons of autumn and spring — read the national guide to the best time to visit Nepal and sort entry formalities with the Nepal visa guide before you go. Most Solu treks share the same permit logic and the same long, scenic walk-in, so it is easy to combine two or three into a single trip. Browse the pins below and build your route from Phaplu.

Frequently asked questions
What treks start from Phaplu?+
Phaplu in Solukhumbu is a launchpad for several treks: the classic low walk-in to Everest Base Camp, the short Pikey Peak ridge trek, the off-beat Numbur Cheese Circuit, the sacred Dudh Kunda lake trek, and the cultural loop through Junbesi and its monasteries. The walk to Lukla also begins here.
Is Phaplu a good base for Everest trekking?+
Yes. Phaplu sits low and green at about 2,470 metres, so it offers a gentler, cheaper and quieter start to the Everest region than flying into Lukla. Trekkers gain altitude gradually on the multi-day walk-in, which means better acclimatisation and far fewer crowds on the early stages.
Which Phaplu trek is best for first-timers?+
The Pikey Peak trek is the most accessible — short, non-technical and rewarded with a celebrated Everest panorama. The Junbesi and Thubten Choling cultural loop is gentler still, while Dudh Kunda and the Numbur Cheese Circuit suit fitter, more experienced trekkers wanting solitude and remoteness.
What permits do Phaplu treks need?+
Solu treks around Phaplu, Pikey Peak, Junbesi, Dudh Kunda and the Numbur Cheese Circuit require the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit. Continuing into the high Khumbu toward Everest Base Camp also needs Sagarmatha National Park entry. Carry passport copies and enough cash for fees.
