Olangchung Gola Trek

A remote restricted-area trek up the Tamur valley to a centuries-old Tibetan border village in northern Taplejung.

The Olangchung Gola trek carries self-sufficient walkers up the upper Tamur valley from Taplejung to Olangchung Gola (also spelt Walungchung Gola), a centuries-old Tibetan trading village near the Tibet border in the district's far north. It is one of Nepal's most remote routes, usually walked as a northern extension of the Kanchenjunga circuit. This guide covers the trek; for the village itself see Olangchung Gola.

The short answer

Trek north up the Tamur and Ghunsa valleys from the Kanchenjunga road-heads, branching to Olangchung Gola near the border. Allow around a week or more, or add several days to a Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek itinerary. The region is restricted, so arrange permits and a guide first via the Kanchenjunga permits and cost guide, and plan the wider trip from the Kanchenjunga trekking collection.

The route

From the Tamur valley road-heads the trail climbs through subtropical forest and Limbu villages, then enters the colder, higher country of the upper valley. A branch leads north to Olangchung Gola, set among stone-and-timber houses, prayer flags and a weathered gompa that is among the oldest in the region. The walking is remote and committing, with long stages, minimal lodging and few other trekkers — the appeal is precisely its isolation.

Historically the village prospered as a hub on an ancient trans-Himalayan trade route, where Walung traders exchanged Nepali grain for Tibetan salt over a nearby high pass. That heritage lingers in the architecture, customs and dialect, making the trek as much a cultural journey as a physical one.

Why trek it

For experienced trekkers, Olangchung Gola is the far-eastern equivalent of Nepal's famous restricted valleys — a living Tibetan Buddhist community in near-isolation, reached only by those willing to make the long journey north. Combined with the Kanchenjunga base camps, it makes one of the most authentic wilderness circuits in the country.

Good to know

  • Permits and guide: Restricted border region; permits and a registered guide are mandatory. See the permits and cost guide.
  • Self-sufficiency: Lodging is minimal and supplies thin; travel with an organised group and the Nepal trekking guide.
  • Respect the culture: Ask before photographing and tread lightly in the monastery.
  • Best combined: Most walkers add it to a Kanchenjunga trek rather than doing it alone.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Olangchung Gola trek go?+

It follows the upper Tamur and Ghunsa valleys north from the Kanchenjunga trail network to Olangchung Gola, a high Tibetan trading village close to the Tibet border in the far north of Taplejung district. The route is reached only on foot over several days.

How long is the Olangchung Gola trek?+

As a standalone route it is a multi-day trek of around a week or more from the road-heads, but most trekkers do it as an extension of a Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek, adding several days up the Tamur valley. It is remote, with very basic lodging.

Do you need a permit for Olangchung Gola?+

Yes. The village lies in a restricted border region, so you need the appropriate restricted-area and conservation-area permits and must trek with a registered guide in a group, not solo. Arrange everything through a trekking agency before you set out.

Is the Olangchung Gola trek suitable for beginners?+

No. It is one of Nepal's most off-the-beaten-path routes, demanding fitness, self-sufficiency and experience of remote trekking. Lodging is minimal, the terrain is high and committing, and it is best treated as an extension for seasoned Kanchenjunga trekkers.
