The short answer
You cannot trek the Kanchenjunga base camps solo or self-permitted. The permits
Restricted-area permit. The Kanchenjunga region is designated restricted, so trekkers need a special permit issued only through an agency, for a group of two or more accompanied by a guide. This is the rule that rules out solo trekking on the high routes, including the base camp itinerary and the Olangchung Gola trek.
Kanchenjunga Conservation Area permit. The trek passes through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, which requires its own entry permit. Like the restricted-area permit, it is handled by the agency as part of your booking.
Carry passport copies and photos for the paperwork, and set everything up before travelling to Taplejung, as on-the-spot arrangements in this remote district are impractical.
