Kanchenjunga Permits and Cost

The restricted-area permit, conservation permit, guide rule and what a Kanchenjunga trek from Taplejung typically costs.

Trekking the high Kanchenjunga routes requires two permits — a restricted-area permit and a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area permit — plus a registered guide in a group of at least two, all arranged through a licensed agency. There is no independent solo option for the restricted zone. This guide explains the paperwork and what drives the cost; plan the route itself from the Kanchenjunga trekking collection.

The short answer

You cannot trek the Kanchenjunga base camps solo or self-permitted. Book through a registered trekking agency, which secures the restricted-area permit and the conservation-area permit and provides the mandatory guide. The total cost is the sum of permits, guide and porters, food and lodging across a 20-plus-day trek, and remote transport. The gentler Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale rhododendron trek needs no restricted-area permit, so it is far cheaper to organise.

The permits

Restricted-area permit. The Kanchenjunga region is designated restricted, so trekkers need a special permit issued only through an agency, for a group of two or more accompanied by a guide. This is the rule that rules out solo trekking on the high routes, including the base camp itinerary and the Olangchung Gola trek.

Kanchenjunga Conservation Area permit. The trek passes through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, which requires its own entry permit. Like the restricted-area permit, it is handled by the agency as part of your booking.

Carry passport copies and photos for the paperwork, and set everything up before travelling to Taplejung, as on-the-spot arrangements in this remote district are impractical.

What drives the cost

  • Permits: Two permits per trekker, with the restricted-area fee the larger of the two.
  • Guide and porters: A registered guide is mandatory; porters are usual given the length and remoteness.
  • Length: At 20 to 24 days, food and lodging add up even though lodges are basic.
  • Remote transport: Reaching Taplejung by flight to Suketar or a long drive from the Terai is a real cost.

Because of the length, restricted-area rules and remoteness, a Kanchenjunga trek costs more than mainstream routes. For budgeting context across the country, see the Nepal travel budget guide.

Good to know

  • Group rule: A minimum of two trekkers plus a guide is required for the restricted-area permit.
  • Agency only: Permits are not issued to individuals walking in; book in advance.
  • Season affects price: Peak autumn and spring are busier; see the best time for the Kanchenjunga trek.
  • Read the rules: The Nepal trekking guide covers permits and conduct nationally.

Frequently asked questions

What permits do you need for the Kanchenjunga trek?+

You need two permits: a restricted-area permit for the Kanchenjunga region and a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area permit. Both are arranged through a registered trekking agency, which also supplies the mandatory guide. Solo, independent trekking is not permitted in the restricted zone.

Can you trek Kanchenjunga without a guide?+

No. As a restricted area, Kanchenjunga requires trekkers to travel with a registered guide in a group of at least two, organised through a licensed agency. Independent solo permits are not issued, so a guided arrangement is unavoidable for the high routes.

How much does the Kanchenjunga trek cost?+

Costs vary widely with group size, duration and service level, but the main components are the two permits, the mandatory guide and porters, food and lodging on a 20-plus-day trek, and transport to and from remote Taplejung. It is more expensive than mainstream treks due to length and remoteness.

Where do you arrange Kanchenjunga permits?+

Permits are arranged through a registered trekking agency rather than issued to individuals, since the restricted-area permit requires an agency and guide. The conservation-area permit is handled the same way. Set this up before travelling to Taplejung, as on-the-spot arrangements are impractical.
