Besisahar & the Lamjung Region

Things to do and trek stages around Besisahar in Lamjung — palace, trail villages, rafting and homestays.

The Lamjung region around Besisahar is far more than a roadhead — it pairs the dramatic lower stages of the Annapurna Circuit with green-hill culture, a historic palace, big whitewater and warm village homestays. This collection gathers the best things to do and the key trek stages, from the famous Marsyangdi-valley trail to quiet lowland towns most travellers rush past.

In short: climb to the ruined hilltop palace of Lamjung Durbar, walk the lower circuit through Bhulbhule, Bahundanda and Jagat, raft the Marsyangdi, slow down in a Gurung homestay, and dip into everyday hill life at Sundar Bazaar. Tap any pin below for what to expect and how to reach it.

Culture and history

The standout cultural sight is Lamjung Durbar, the ruined hilltop palace of the old Lamjung kingdom on a ridge above the Marsyangdi — the lineage from which the Shah dynasty spread to neighbouring Gorkha and went on to unify Nepal. Down in the gentler lowlands, the working market town of Sundar Bazaar offers an unhurried look at everyday farming Lamjung, well off the trekking trail. To sleep among the hills rather than in town, our Lamjung homestays guide covers the district's Gurung village stays.

Trek stages up the Marsyangdi

This is where the great loop begins. From the Besisahar bazaar and jeep stand, the trail climbs through Bhulbhule and Khudi, the first riverside villages, then rises to the ridge saddle of Bahundanda and on to the stone village of Jagat — covered in our Bahundanda and Jagat trek stage guide. A rough jeep road to Chame and Manang now shadows these lower stages, so you can ride or walk toward Manang and the high passes beyond.

Adventure and views

The river that drains the circuit is one of Nepal's finest whitewater runs: Marsyangdi River rafting is a steep, continuous class-4 challenge for confident paddlers, with put-ins in the upper valley near Bhulbhule and Besisahar as the natural base. On clear mornings, pair any of this with the mountain panorama from town — see the full list in our top things to do in Besisahar.

When to go

Autumn (October to November) and spring (March to April) are the prime seasons, bringing dry, clear weather, the best mountain views and ideal conditions for both trekking and rafting. The lower Marsyangdi valley turns hot in late spring, while the monsoon swells the river and can wash out the rough mountain road, so the dry seasons are most reliable. Lowland sights like Lamjung Durbar, Sundar Bazaar and the village homestays stay accessible year-round, making them a good fallback in shoulder months when the high trail is quiet.

From Besisahar the trail climbs the Marsyangdi valley through Khudi and Bhulbhule, up to the ridge village of Bahundanda, then on through Ghermu and the Syange waterfall to Jagat, near the Manang boundary. A rough jeep road now shadows these lower stages to Chame and Manang.

Is the Lamjung region only for trekkers?+

No — while Lamjung is the gateway to the Annapurna Circuit, it also offers culture and slow travel: the historic Lamjung Durbar, Gurung homestays, the market town of Sundar Bazaar and Marsyangdi rafting. Non-trekkers can enjoy the green hills without crossing a single high pass.
