Besisahar Bazaar

Lamjung's busy roadhead market on the Marsyangdi, and the trailhead and jeep stand for the Annapurna Circuit.

Besisahar Bazaar is the market heart of Besisahar, the headquarters of Lamjung district, set at around 760 metres on the Marsyangdi River in Nepal's green middle hills. It is a classic Himalayan roadhead — the place where the paved road ends and the great trekking routes begin — and its busy main street hums with the trade of the surrounding hills and the steady traffic of Annapurna Circuit trekkers.

What to expect

The bazaar strings along the valley in a lively ribbon of shops, lodges, jeep stands and produce stalls. Watch four-wheel-drives load up for the rough climb to Chame and Manang, porters shoulder loads for the trails, and trekkers organise permits, guides and last-minute supplies. There is little in the way of monuments down in the bazaar — the appeal is the energy of working Nepal and the green-hill setting on a famous mountain river.

Frequently asked questions

What is Besisahar Bazaar?+

Besisahar Bazaar is the main market and town centre of Besisahar, the headquarters of Lamjung district. It sits on the Marsyangdi River at around 760 metres and serves as the roadhead, jeep stand and trading hub for the surrounding hill villages and the Annapurna Circuit.

What can you do in Besisahar Bazaar?+

Wander the riverside market, watch jeeps and porters load for the hills, stock up on trekking supplies and arrange permits, guides and porters. The bazaar is the jumping-off point for the Annapurna Circuit, Marsyangdi rafting and the jeep road up to Chame and Manang.

Is Besisahar Bazaar worth visiting?+

As a destination in itself it's modest, but as a slice of working hill-Nepal it's genuinely lively, and almost every Annapurna Circuit trekker passes through. Its setting on the Marsyangdi in the green middle hills, and its role as a mountain gateway, give it real character.

Where is Besisahar Bazaar?+

Besisahar Bazaar lies in Lamjung district in Gandaki Province, north of Dumre on the Prithvi Highway, on the Marsyangdi River. It is the last major bazaar before the rough mountain road climbs the Marsyangdi valley toward Chame and Manang.
