A Ramsar-listed oxbow lake and wetland of crocodiles and waterbirds near Bharatpur.
- Address
- Bishazari Tal, Bharatpur, Chitwan, Nepal
Overview
Bishazari Tal, whose name means the "Twenty Thousand Lakes", is a sprawling system of oxbow lakes and wetland channels in the buffer zone of Chitwan National Park, near Bharatpur. Formed by the meandering and shifting of old river courses, it is a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance and one of the most peaceful, least-crowded spots in the whole Chitwan area.
The water, reeds and surrounding forest create a rich mosaic of habitats, making this one of the best places near Sauraha for birdwatching and quiet nature time away from the jeep tracks.
What to expect
Expect calm, reflective water fringed by forest, with a watchtower and walking trails that let you scan for wildlife. The wetland is alive with waterbirds — egrets, herons, storks, kingfishers and, in winter, flocks of migratory ducks. Crocodiles and turtles bask along the banks, and the encircling sal forest shelters deer and other mammals. It is a slower, more contemplative experience than a safari, ideal for photographers and birders.
When and how
Visit in the cool, dry season from October to March for the best weather and the highest bird numbers, when migratory species swell the resident population. Early morning brings glassy water and the most active wildlife. Bishazari Tal lies between Bharatpur and the park, reachable by a short jeep ride or a longer, scenic cycle from Sauraha; a licensed guide is recommended both to find wildlife and to navigate the buffer-zone trails.
Tips
- Bring binoculars and a long lens — many of the best sightings are across the water or high in the trees.
- Wear neutral colours and move quietly to avoid spooking the birds.
- Carry water, sun protection and insect repellent, especially in the warmer months.
- Combine it with birdwatching in Chitwan or a jungle walk for a full nature-focused day.
Bishazari Tal is one of the quieter top things to do in Chitwan and a highlight for anyone interested in Nepal's national parks and wildlife. Plan around it with the Chitwan travel guide.
