Chitwan Safari Activities

Jeep safaris, canoe trips, jungle walks, the elephant centre, Tharu shows and birding from Sauraha.

The best way to experience Chitwan National Park is to combine its three classic safari styles — a jeep safari, a Rapti River canoe trip and a guided jungle walk — and round them out with the elephant breeding centre, an evening Tharu cultural show and some birdwatching. All of it runs from the riverside village of Sauraha, the main gateway on the park's northern edge, and a focused two nights is enough to do the lot. This collection gathers each activity with practical timing, what you will see and how to do it responsibly.

Start with the safaris

The headline experience is the open-jeep run through grassland and sal forest, your best all-round chance at one-horned rhinos, deer, crocodiles and, with luck, a Bengal tiger. Our Chitwan jeep safari guide covers half-day versus full-day routes and the best hours to go. For a gentler counterpoint, a Rapti River canoe trip drifts you silently past basking gharial and mugger crocodiles and a wall of riverbank birdlife — superb at dawn. To meet the forest on its own terms, a guided jungle walk in Chitwan puts you on foot with licensed naturalists, the most immersive option and the best for tracks, small wildlife and birds. If you are weighing them up, our existing Chitwan safari guide compares jeep, canoe and walking side by side.

Culture, conservation and birds

Chitwan is more than wildlife-spotting. The nightly Tharu cultural show in Sauraha is the best window into the Terai's indigenous Tharu community, famous for its energetic stick dance — read the wider story in our national guide to Tharu culture of the Terai. For conservation up close, the Khorsor elephant breeding centre lets you see mothers and calves ethically, without the welfare problems of elephant-back rides. And with more than 500 recorded species, bird watching in Chitwan is world-class, from kingfishers over the Rapti to the rare Bengal florican in the grasslands.

How to plan it

Base yourself in Sauraha and let your lodge arrange permits, licensed guides and transport — see our top things to do in Chitwan and the existing jungle safari in Chitwan page for the classic jeep outing. A typical two-night plan looks like this:

  • Day 1: Afternoon arrival, sunset canoe or riverbank walk, evening Tharu show.
  • Day 2: Full-day jeep safari deep into the park, or a morning jeep plus an afternoon jungle walk.
  • Day 3: Dawn birdwatching and the elephant breeding centre before you leave.

Travel responsibly throughout: wear neutral colours, keep a respectful distance, never feed or bait wildlife, and follow your guide's briefing on every activity. October to March is the prime window — cooler, drier and with shorter grass for easier spotting — as set out in our best time to visit Nepal guide. Avoid the monsoon, when tall grass and high rivers make wildlife harder to find and can suspend canoe trips. For the bigger conservation picture, see Nepal's national parks and wildlife.

How many days do you need to do Chitwan's safari activities?+
