Tharu Cultural Show in Chitwan
An evening of Tharu music and the famous stick dance in Sauraha — Chitwan's best cultural night out.
An evening Tharu cultural show is the best way to meet the human side of Chitwan — a lively program of traditional music and dance staged most nights in Sauraha, the gateway village to the national park. The Terai lowlands are the homeland of the Tharu, one of Nepal's largest indigenous communities, and the show is the easiest, most enjoyable window into their culture after a day spent tracking wildlife. The undisputed highlight is the famous stick dance.
The stick dance
The signature stick dance — lathi naach — is a fast, rhythmic group dance in which performers strike pairs of wooden sticks together in tightly coordinated patterns, weaving in and out as the tempo builds. It is thought to have roots in mock combat and harvest celebration, and it is genuinely thrilling to watch live. A typical evening also features the peacock dance, fire dances and folk songs accompanied by drums, ending with cheerful audience participation that draws visitors onto the floor.
What an evening includes
Shows run most evenings after dark at community cultural halls in Sauraha and last about an hour. Many lodges include a ticket or will arrange one for you, so it is a simple, low-effort add-on — the perfect way to round off a day that began with a Chitwan jeep safari or a visit to the Khorsor elephant breeding centre. Performances are staged by local Tharu groups, and ticket proceeds help support the community.
Watching respectfully
This is living culture, not a museum piece, so a little courtesy goes a long way. Arrive on time, applaud generously, and ask before taking close-up photos of performers. Joining the dance when invited is welcomed and part of the fun. To understand what you are watching — the history, dress, food and traditions behind the performance — read our national guide to Tharu culture of the Terai, and see the existing Tharu cultural program page for more.
The cultural show is one of the most rewarding pieces of the Chitwan safari activities collection and a regular feature of the top things to do in Chitwan. Plan the rest of your trip from the Chitwan travel guide.
