Bhagwati Temple, Dhulikhel

The Bhagwati Temple is the principal Hindu shrine of Dhulikhel — a historic tiered Newari pagoda dedicated to the goddess Bhagwati, a fierce form of Durga, standing at the upper edge of the old Newari town. With its carved wooden struts, brick tiers and small courtyard, it is both an active place of worship and one of the town's architectural landmarks.

What to see

The temple follows the classic Newar pagoda form: a stepped brick base rising to tiered roofs, with hand-carved timber struts bracing the eaves and a modest courtyard at its foot. Sitting on raised ground at the top of the old town, its terrace gives a fine outlook over the tight cluster of brick houses and tiled roofs toward the surrounding hills. Come early or late in the day and you'll often find the light at its best across the valley.

Inside the courtyard you'll see the everyday rhythm of a working shrine — devotees ringing the bells, leaving offerings of flowers, vermilion and rice, and lighting small lamps. Take a slow look at the woodwork, which repays close attention, then step back to the terrace edge for the view.

The goddess and her festivals

Bhagwati is worshipped across Nepal as a form of Durga, and shrines to her draw their biggest crowds during Dashain, the country's longest and most important festival, when the goddess is honoured over many days in autumn. Getting there

Most visitors reach the temple simply by walking up through Dhulikhel's old town, which climbs gradually to the shrine at its upper edge — a stroll of only a few minutes from the main squares. Dhulikhel itself sits on the ridge east of the Kathmandu Valley and is reached by road from the capital; local buses and shared vehicles run to the town, and from the centre it's an easy walk to the temple. There's no need to arrange anything special — pair the visit with a wander through the lanes and you'll pass the temple naturally.

Best time to visit

Autumn (roughly October to November) and spring (around March to April) bring the clearest skies and the best chance of distant mountain views from the ridge above town, and autumn also coincides with the Dashain season at the temple. Early morning is ideal if you want to combine your visit with the sunrise from the viewpoint above. The monsoon months bring cloud and rain that often close in the hills.
