Dhulikhel Itinerary

Flexible 1-3 day Dhulikhel plans built around sunrise, the old town and the Namobuddha hike.

This Dhulikhel itinerary helps you match the town to your time, whether you have a single overnight for sunrise or three days to walk the full loop. Below are flexible plans for one, two and three days, all built around the headline experiences and easy to combine with nearby Bhaktapur and Nagarkot.

The short answer

For one night, do sunrise plus the old town. For two days, add the Namobuddha hike. For three days, walk the full Dhulikhel–Namobuddha–Panauti loop. Slot it into a wider trip with our Nepal 7-day itinerary.

One day (overnight)

Arrive in the afternoon, wander the old Newari town and the Bhagwati Temple, and settle into a view hotel. Rise before dawn for the Dhulikhel sunrise viewpoint at the Kali temple and Shanti Ban Buddha, then head back to Kathmandu after breakfast.

Two days

Keep day one as above. On day two, take on the hike to Namobuddha via the thousand steps, exploring the monastery before returning by road or taxi in the afternoon.

Three days

Turn it into the classic Dhulikhel–Namobuddha–Panauti loop trek: Dhulikhel to Namobuddha, on to the medieval town of Panauti, then back to Dhulikhel or out to the road. This is the most rewarding way to experience the area.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Dhulikhel?+

One night covers sunrise and the old town; two nights let you add the Namobuddha hike at a relaxed pace; three days are ideal for the full Dhulikhel, Namobuddha and Panauti loop with overnight stops along the way.

Can you visit Dhulikhel and Namobuddha in one trip?+

Yes — the standard plan is to catch sunrise and explore Dhulikhel's old town on day one, then walk to Namobuddha on day two, returning by road or continuing to Panauti. It is one of the best short hiking trips from Kathmandu.

Can you combine Dhulikhel with Bhaktapur or Nagarkot?+

Easily — all three sit east of Kathmandu on or near the Araniko Highway. A common loop is Bhaktapur, then a night in Nagarkot or Dhulikhel for sunrise, before the Namobuddha walk and the drive back.
