The Best Time to Visit Dolpo
Dolpo's rain shadow keeps it dry through the monsoon — spring, summer and autumn all work. A season-by-season guide.
The best time to visit Dolpo is wider than for most of Nepal, because the region sits in the trans-Himalayan rain shadow behind the main range. That dry climate means spring, summer and autumn all work — and Dolpo is one of the few parts of Nepal genuinely worth trekking during the monsoon.
The short answer
For the most settled weather and the clearest views of Phoksundo Lake, aim for spring (May–June) or autumn (late September–November). Because the high Himalaya block most of the monsoon, summer (June–August) is also a good window here while the rest of Nepal is soaked — the main catch is that the flights to Juphal can be cloud-bound on the approach. Winter (December–February) is brutally cold and snowbound, and most treks stop.
Season by season
- Spring (May–June): Warming days, melting snow on the passes, and one of the prime windows for both Lower and Upper Dolpo treks.
- Summer (June–August): Dolpo's rain-shadow advantage — dry up the valleys while the lowlands flood, though the Nepalgunj–Juphal leg may face flight delays.
- Autumn (late Sep–Nov): Crisp, clear and stable, with the most reliable mountain weather of the year.
- Winter (Dec–Feb): Cold and stark; high passes close and villages empty out toward lower valleys.
Timing the Shey festival
Culture, not just weather, draws some travellers to a particular date. The great pilgrimage to Crystal Mountain and Shey Gompa centres on a festival held roughly every twelve years in the Year of the Sheep, plus annual late-summer observances when pilgrims walk the mountain kora. If a festival is your priority, pin down the dates with your agency well ahead, as they follow the Tibetan Buddhist calendar.
Good to know
- Wind and cold: Pack warm layers in every season — nights are cold even in summer at altitude.
- Flights: Whatever the season, build buffer days into the Juphal flight chain.
- Plan around it: Sort paperwork via Dolpo permits and access, and see how the region fits the national picture in the best time to visit Nepal and the Upper Dolpo trek guide.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Dolpo?+
Spring (May to June) and autumn (late September to November) give the most settled weather and clearest views of Phoksundo Lake. Because Dolpo lies in the Himalayan rain shadow, it also stays largely dry through the summer monsoon, making it one of Nepal's best monsoon-season trekking regions.
Can you trek Dolpo in the monsoon?+
Yes. Unlike most of Nepal, Dolpo sits behind the high Himalaya in a rain shadow, so it sees little of the summer monsoon. June to early September can be a fine window for the trekking itself, though the Nepalgunj–Juphal flights may be disrupted by cloud and rain on the approach.
What is the weather like in Dolpo?+
Dolpo is high, dry and windy. Days are sunny and the air is thin; nights are cold year-round and bitter in winter. Strong afternoon winds are common, and temperatures swing sharply between sun and shade at altitude, even in the warmer months.
Is winter a good time for Dolpo?+
Winter (December to February) is harsh and snowbound, high passes close, and many Dolpo villagers migrate to lower valleys, so services thin out and most treks stop. It is the least practical season, suited only to experienced expeditions prepared for extreme cold.
