Upper Dolpo Circuit Trek

A 20 to 25 day camping trek over 5,000 m passes to Shey Gompa, Crystal Mountain and the inner valleys of Dolpo.

The Upper Dolpo circuit trek is a 20 to 25 day camping expedition into the inner valleys of trans-Himalayan Dolpo — a high desert of ochre cliffs, barley terraces and yak caravans that feels closer to the Tibetan plateau than to anywhere else in Nepal. The route reaches the sacred Crystal Mountain and Shey Gompa, links the ancient villages of Saldang and Dho Tarap, and crosses several passes above 5,000 m. It is one of the country's hardest and most rewarding walks, and a major step up from the Lower Dolpo trek to Phoksundo Lake.

Overview and highlights

Most circuits begin like Lower Dolpo — the flight to Juphal, the walk up the Suligad valley to Phoksundo Lake — then break away north over the high passes into country few outsiders ever see. The spiritual heart is Shey Gompa, the Crystal Monastery beside Crystal Mountain, focus of Dolpo's great pilgrimage. Beyond it lie the windswept villages of Saldang and the broad Dho Tarap valley, dotted with Bon and Buddhist monasteries and meditation caves. This is the landscape immortalised in Peter Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard, written on a journey to Shey in search of the cat.

The passes and route

An inner-Dolpo circuit typically strings together passes such as the Kang La, Saldang La and Jeng La, crossing from the Phoksundo basin to Shey, then on through Saldang to Dho Tarap before descending back toward the Thuli Bheri. Some longer variants exit south to Dunai, while others cross east toward Jomsom, adding logistical complexity. Whatever the line, expect repeated high passes, long days and full self-sufficiency — there is little or no trekker accommodation in the high villages.

Difficulty, cost and preparation

This is almost entirely a camping trek with a full support crew carrying food and equipment. The combination of length, altitude and isolation makes it suitable only for fit trekkers with prior high-altitude experience. Acclimatise patiently and read altitude sickness in Nepal carefully. The cost is steep, driven largely by the Upper Dolpo permit — work through the figures in Dolpo permits and cost. Frequently asked questions

How long is the Upper Dolpo circuit trek?+

Allow about 20 to 25 days on the trail, plus travel and buffer days, for a full Upper Dolpo circuit. The route is long, high and almost entirely camping, reflecting both the distance and the acclimatisation needed for several passes above 5,000 m.

What passes does the Upper Dolpo trek cross?+

An inner-Dolpo circuit typically crosses several passes over 5,000 m, including the Kang La, Saldang La and Jeng La, linking the valleys of Shey Gompa, Saldang and Dho Tarap. The exact passes depend on the route and direction your agency chooses.

How hard is the Upper Dolpo trek?+

It is one of Nepal's toughest treks. You camp for three weeks or more, cross repeated 5,000 m passes and travel through extremely remote country far from help. The walking is non-technical, but the altitude, length and isolation demand strong fitness and prior high-altitude experience.

What does the Upper Dolpo trek cost?+

The Upper Dolpo restricted-area permit is about USD 500 per person for the first 10 days, plus roughly USD 50 per extra day, one of the priciest in Nepal. With the national park fee, a full camping crew and long logistics, guided packages commonly run USD 3,000 to 4,000 per person.
