Lauribina La Pass

The high pass above Gosaikunda at about 4,610m, the dramatic gateway west toward Helambu.

The Lauribina La is the high pass that crowns the Gosaikunda trek, rising to about 4,610m just above the sacred lake basin. It is the highest point of the route and the dramatic gateway west toward Helambu, with sweeping views over the high country on a clear morning. Crossing it turns a there-and-back walk to the lakes into a genuine high-mountain traverse.

What to expect

From the Gosaikunda lake basin the trail climbs steadily over rock and, often, snow to the prayer-flag-strewn col, then drops a long way down the far side toward the Helambu valleys. It is non-technical but tiring: the altitude, the cold and the length of the day all add up. This is the standout challenge of the Gosaikunda to Helambu trek.

Cross it safely

  • Only attempt the pass in settled, clear weather — cloud and snow make it dangerous.
  • Start early to be over the top with hours of daylight left for the long descent.
  • Be properly acclimatised first; read our altitude sickness in Nepal guide before you go.
  • Carry warm layers, traction for snow, and enough food and water for a long day.

When to go

Aim for autumn or spring, the clearest and safest windows; see the best time to visit Gosaikunda for the details. In winter the pass is often blocked by snow. For wider kit and fitness advice, see the Nepal trekking guide, and plan the rest of your trip from the Gosaikunda travel guide.

Frequently asked questions

How high is the Lauribina La pass?+

The Lauribina La sits at about 4,610m, just above the Gosaikunda lake basin. It is the highest point of the Gosaikunda trek and the gateway west toward Helambu, so it is the most demanding day of the route in thin, cold air.

Is the Lauribina La pass difficult?+

It is non-technical but strenuous. The climb from the lakes to the pass and the long descent on the far side make for a tiring high-altitude day, and snow can make it harder. Good acclimatisation and an early start matter far more than technical skill.

When can you cross the Lauribina La?+

Autumn (October to November) and spring (March to May) are the safest, clearest windows. In winter and after heavy storms the pass can be blocked by deep snow, and it should only be attempted in settled, clear weather with a guide who knows the route.

Where does the Lauribina La pass lead?+

Crossing the pass drops you west and south toward the Helambu region, via high camps such as Phedi and Ghopte down to Kutumsang and Sundarijal. Many trekkers walk the longer Gosaikunda to Helambu route rather than returning the way they came.
