Best Time to Visit Gosaikunda
Autumn and spring for clear skies and safe trails — plus when the pass opens and the pilgrimage falls.
The best time to visit Gosaikunda is autumn (October to November) for the clearest skies and most stable weather, with spring (March to May) a close second. Both seasons give safe trails, open water at the lakes and the best chance of crossing the Lauribina La pass — while winter and the monsoon each bring real complications.
Autumn (October to November) — the top choice
After the monsoon clears, the air is sharp and stable, with the best views of Langtang Lirung and the Ganesh Himal from the Gosaikunda lake basin. Trails are dry, the Lauribina La pass is usually open, and nights are cold but clear. This is the busiest and most reliable trekking season.
Spring (March to May) — warm and green
Spring is warmer, with rhododendron forest in bloom on the climb from Dhunche and generally good high-country weather. Skies can be a little hazier than in autumn, but the pass is usually crossable and the lower trails are pleasant.
Monsoon and Janai Purnima (June to September)
The monsoon brings cloud, rain and leeches lower down, but it also coincides with the Janai Purnima pilgrimage in August, when thousands climb to the lake for a holy dip. It is atmospheric for those prepared for wet, crowded conditions, but views are unreliable.
Winter (December to February)
The lakes freeze, snow can bury the trail near the basin, and the pass is often closed. Only experienced, well-equipped trekkers with a guide should attempt Gosaikunda in midwinter.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Gosaikunda?+
Autumn (October to November) brings the clearest skies and the most stable weather, with sharp views of the surrounding peaks. Spring (March to May) is also excellent, warmer and greener lower down. Both are the safest windows for the high lakes and the pass.
Can you visit Gosaikunda in winter?+
It is possible but demanding. From December to February the lakes freeze, deep snow can bury the trail near the basin, and the Lauribina La pass is often blocked. Only experienced, well-equipped trekkers with a guide should attempt it in midwinter.
When is the Lauribina La pass open?+
The pass is most reliably crossable in autumn and spring. After heavy snow in winter or storms in any season it can close, so it should only be attempted in settled, clear weather. Check conditions locally before planning a crossing into Helambu.
Should you trek to Gosaikunda during Janai Purnima?+
Janai Purnima, in August, is an extraordinary pilgrimage but falls in the monsoon, so expect cloud, rain, leeches lower down and crowded lodges. It is atmospheric for those prepared for wet, busy conditions, but autumn is better for views and comfort.
