Ama Yangri Viewpoint
A sacred 3,770m peak above Tarkeghyang with prayer flags and panoramic Himalayan views.
Ama Yangri is a sacred peak rising to about 3,770 metres above the monastery village of Tarkeghyang in Helambu. The day hike to its prayer-flag-crowned summit is the region's finest viewpoint walk, rewarded with a sweeping panorama of the Langtang, Jugal and Rolwaling Himal.
The hike
The round trip from Tarkeghyang takes roughly five to seven hours, climbing through rhododendron and oak forest before emerging onto open ridge. The path is steep in sections but non-technical, suitable for anyone with reasonable fitness. Start early for the clearest views and to be back in the village by afternoon.
The trail gains around 1,100 metres of height from the village, so it feels like a proper mountain day despite the modest summit altitude. The first hours are shaded and forested, alive with birdsong and, in spring, with rhododendron blooms; higher up the trees thin to juniper and open meadow, and the panorama unfolds. Carry plenty of water, as there are no reliable sources on the climb, and bring a warm windproof layer for the exposed summit ridge, which can be cold even on sunny mornings.
Why it matters
Ama Yangri is revered by the Hyolmo people as a protective mountain deity guarding the valley below. The summit and the cairns along the ridge are draped in prayer flags, and local communities make pilgrimages here. Walk clockwise around the shrines and treat the site with respect. To understand its place in local life, read our guide to Hyolmo culture.
When to go
The hike is best in autumn and spring, when skies are clearest and the trail is dry. After fresh snow the upper ridge can be slippery, and in the monsoon the path is muddy and the views unreliable. Aim to leave the village before dawn or at first light so you reach the summit before the late-morning cloud builds. Plan the timing with our guide to the best time to visit Helambu.
Good to know
- Although modest in altitude, the climb gains height quickly, so pace yourself and read our altitude sickness guide.
- The hike is a popular add-on to the Helambu trek circuit and is usually done as a day return from Tarkeghyang.
- A local guide is helpful, as forks in the forest section can be confusing in mist.
