The Helambu Trek Circuit
A gentle 5-7 day ridge loop near Kathmandu through the Hyolmo villages of Helambu.
The Helambu trek circuit is the gentlest classic walk near Kathmandu — a five to seven day ridge loop through the Hyolmo villages of Helambu, linking forest trails, hilltop gompas and apple orchards. It starts on foot from Sundarijal on the edge of the Kathmandu Valley, needs no flight, and stays low enough to suit beginners, families and anyone short on time.
Overview
Helambu is prized for culture and accessibility rather than extreme scenery. The trail climbs forested ridges and drops into terraced valleys, connecting the monastery village of Tarkeghyang and the apple village of Sermathang. A favourite add-on is the day climb to the sacred Ama Yangri viewpoint for a wide Himalayan panorama.
Typical itinerary
| Day | Route | Altitude |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Drive Kathmandu to Sundarijal, trek to Chisapani | 2,165 m |
| 2 | Chisapani to Kutumsang | 2,470 m |
| 3 | Kutumsang to Thadepati | 3,650 m |
| 4 | Thadepati to Tarkeghyang | 2,600 m |
| 5 | Tarkeghyang to Sermathang | 2,610 m |
| 6 | Sermathang to Melamchi, drive to Kathmandu | 870 m |
The loop is flexible: it can be shortened to five days or extended over the Laurebina La toward Gosaikunda.
Difficulty and altitude
This is an easy-to-moderate trek. Paths are non-technical and the modest altitude keeps the risk of altitude sickness low, though the high point near Thadepati pass is worth respecting. The main work is the steady climbing between ridge villages, so a base level of fitness helps.
Why choose Helambu
Compared with the Annapurna or Everest regions, Helambu offers a rare combination of low altitude, short approach and rich culture. There is no flight to book, no long drive to a remote roadhead, and little risk of altitude sickness, yet you still walk through forest, gompas and orchards with the high Himalaya on the horizon. It works beautifully as a standalone first trek, as a warm-up before a higher route, or as a winter and shoulder-season alternative when the big passes are closed.
Permits and practicalities
The northern section enters Langtang National Park, requiring its entry permit and a TIMS card; a licensed guide is required. Frequently asked questions
How long is the Helambu trek circuit?+
Most itineraries run five to seven days, starting on foot from Sundarijal on the edge of Kathmandu and looping through ridgetop villages such as Tarkeghyang and Sermathang before descending to Melamchi. The route is flexible and can be shortened or extended toward Gosaikunda.
How difficult is the Helambu trek?+
It is easy to moderate by Himalayan standards. The trails are non-technical and the altitude is low, with the high point near Thadepati pass around 3,650 metres, so altitude sickness is unlikely. The main effort is the steady up-and-down between ridge villages.
Do you need a guide and permits for the Helambu trek?+
The northern section enters Langtang National Park, which requires its entry permit and a TIMS card, and a licensed guide is required for trekking. Confirm the exact permits for your itinerary with an agency in Kathmandu, as the loop straddles the park boundary.
When is the best time for the Helambu trek?+
October to November and March to May give the best weather and views, but the low altitude makes Helambu pleasant in the shoulder seasons and even winter, when higher treks are snowed in. The monsoon brings rain, leeches and cloud and is best avoided.
