Helambu Apple Orchards

Famous ridge-village apple orchards of Helambu, with autumn fruit, cider and local yak cheese.

Helambu's apple orchards are famous across Nepal, and the ridge villages of the Hyolmo homeland are at their best in autumn, when the trees are heavy with fruit. Around Sermathang in particular, the orchards line the ridge, and you can taste fresh apples, dried apple snacks and local cider straight from the source, often served alongside yak cheese.

A taste of the harvest

The apple harvest peaks roughly September to November. In season the villages sell fresh fruit, dry apple slices for the trail, and home-pressed cider. Alongside the apples, Helambu is known for its yak and chauri cheese, Tibetan-style butter tea and hearty Hyolmo home cooking served in the lodges of Tarkeghyang and Sermathang.

Apple growing took root in Helambu in the second half of the twentieth century and has since become a hallmark of the region's identity and a useful cash crop for the Hyolmo villages. The cool, high climate and clean air suit the trees well, and you will see orchards terraced into the ridge around the houses. Beyond fresh eating apples, families dry and preserve the fruit to last through winter, and some press it into cider and other drinks, so there is something to try whatever the month.

How to experience it

  • Walk the orchard ridges of Sermathang in the golden autumn light.
  • Buy apples, dried apple and cider directly from village families.
  • Pair the fruit with a tasting of local yak cheese and butter tea.

Where to taste it

The ridge around Sermathang is the classic spot, but you will find orchards and fruit for sale in Tarkeghyang and the smaller villages too. Walking the Helambu trek circuit in autumn is effectively a moving tasting tour, with families happy to sell apples and cheese to passing trekkers. Lodges and homestays serve apples at meals, and a slice of fresh yak cheese with butter tea is a fine reward after a day on the ridge.

Good to know

Apples and cheese are part of everyday Hyolmo life rather than a staged tourist experience, so buy directly from growers and enjoy them as the villagers do. A few practical notes: the harvest window is short, so check timing before you travel; carry small cash to buy from families; and remember that yak cheese is a hard, strong-flavoured product quite unlike soft Western cheeses.
