Sermathang to Tarkeghyang Trail
A gentle one-day ridge walk between two Hyolmo villages, through forest and chortens in Helambu.
The Sermathang to Tarkeghyang trail is the gentlest and most scenic single stage of the Helambu trek, a four-to-six-hour ridge walk linking two of the region's finest Hyolmo villages at around 2,600 metres. There is barely any altitude gain, the path stays largely in forest and along open ridge, and the views toward the Langtang and Jugal Himal are constant. It is a perfect taster of Helambu trekking and Hyolmo culture for those short on time.
The route
Most walkers set out from Sermathang, famous for its apple orchards, and follow the broad ridge northwest toward Tarkeghyang, the largest Hyolmo monastery village. The trail dips through stands of rhododendron, oak and pine, passing whitewashed chortens, mani walls and prayer-flag-draped rest stops. Small settlements such as Gangyul and Kakani break up the walk, with tea houses where you can pause.
The gradient is forgiving in both directions, so you can reverse the route to end among Sermathang's orchards instead. Either way the walk feels less like a trek and more like a stroll through a living Buddhist landscape.
What to see along the way
- Chortens and mani walls: the ridge is dotted with Hyolmo Buddhist monuments; walk clockwise past them.
- Forest and birdlife: the shaded sections are rich in birdsong, especially in the early morning.
- Mountain views: clear gaps in the trees reveal the Jugal Himal and, on good days, distant Langtang peaks.
- Village monasteries: both end villages have handsome gompas, part of the monasteries and gompas of Helambu.
Tips for the walk
Start in the morning while the air is clear and cloud has yet to build. Carry water and a few snacks, as services are limited between the villages, and bring a layer for the breezy ridge. Because junctions in the forest can be confusing in mist, follow a guide or local advice. This stage fits naturally into the Helambu trek circuit and is easy to combine with the Ama Yangri day hike from Tarkeghyang.
When to go
The trail is best in autumn and spring, when skies are clearest and the apple harvest fills Sermathang's orchards; plan with the best time to visit Helambu. Frequently asked questions
How long is the Sermathang to Tarkeghyang walk?+
The ridge walk between Sermathang and Tarkeghyang takes around four to six hours at an easy pace, covering roughly 12 to 14 kilometres of mostly gentle forest and ridge trail. Many trekkers do it as a single relaxed day with stops at chortens and tea houses.
Which direction is better, Sermathang to Tarkeghyang or reverse?+
Both work well. Walking from Sermathang to Tarkeghyang means finishing at the larger monastery village and the Ama Yangri trailhead, while the reverse ends in the apple orchards of Sermathang. Neither involves a hard climb, so direction is a matter of itinerary.
Is the Sermathang to Tarkeghyang trail hard?+
No. It is one of the easiest stages of the Helambu trek, with gentle ups and downs along a forested ridge at around 2,600 metres. The low altitude and non-technical path make it suitable for fit beginners and families.
Do you need a guide for this section?+
A guide is helpful because forest junctions can be confusing, and a licensed guide is required for trekking in the area. The walk passes through Langtang National Park territory, so carry your permit and TIMS card.
