Kakani Himalaya Viewpoint
A ridge-top panorama of Ganesh Himal, Langtang and Manaslu, close to Kathmandu.
The Kakani Himalaya viewpoint is the reason most travellers climb the ridge from Kathmandu. From this 2,070m shelf on the valley's north-west rim, a clear morning opens a long arc of the Himalaya: the Ganesh Himal rising directly to the north, Langtang Lirung and the Langtang range to the north-east, and Manaslu with the Annapurna foothills away to the west. It is one of the closest places to the capital where the high mountains feel genuinely close.
How to do it
Come up the evening before or set out early. The peaks are sharpest before mid-morning haze drifts in, so a dawn arrival rewards you most — this is one of the better sunrise spots near Kathmandu. The ridge has several open lookouts along the road and through the resort gardens; a short stroll lets you find an uncluttered foreground of pine and terraced fields.
What you're looking at
The standout is the Ganesh Himal, named for its resemblance to the elephant-headed god Ganesh, rising due north of the ridge. Sweep your eye north-east and the Langtang range comes into view, with Langtang Lirung the dominant peak — the same massif that feeds the popular Langtang valley treks. Further west, Manaslu, the world's eighth-highest mountain, anchors the far horizon, with the Annapurna foothills beyond. Closer in, the forested Shivapuri ridge frames the valley side and reminds you how green this rim of Kathmandu still is. A clear winter dawn here is one of the most rewarding free mountain views anywhere near the capital.
Good to know
- Bring a warm layer — the ridge is breezy and cold before the sun is up, even in mild seasons.
- Skies are clearest in autumn and winter; monsoon cloud often hides the range.
- Combine the view with a walk: the Kakani day hike from Kathmandu starts right here.
- Bring binoculars if you have them — the high peaks reward a closer look at dawn.
Make a morning of it by pairing the panorama with the ridge picnic spots and a trout lunch, and time your visit using the best time to visit Kakani. The open ridge viewpoints are free. Some private gardens, resorts and the strawberry or trout farms may charge a small entry or table fee, and the nearby Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park has its own ticket if you walk in from that side.
