Charikot Bazaar
The Dolakha district headquarters and gateway to Kalinchowk — a highway bazaar for food, fuel and jeeps.
Charikot is the headquarters of Dolakha district, a highway hill town at around 1,900 metres in Nepal's eastern Bagmati hills, and the gateway through which every Kalinchowk trip passes. Strung along the road, it is the area's main market, transport and services hub — the place to pause for food, fuel and supplies before the climb up to Kuri village and the snow ridge.
What to expect
Charikot is a working district centre, not a polished tourist sight. Its bazaar lines the highway with shops, eateries, banks and bus stands, busy with the everyday trade of the surrounding hills. On a clear day the town enjoys fine ridge and Himalayan views, and it makes a practical, low-key stop on the way to or from Kalinchowk.
For most travellers Charikot is a transit and resupply point: stock up here, switch to a local jeep for the rough road up to Kuri, and use the town's services that you will not find higher on the mountain.
A base for Dolakha
Beyond its role as the Kalinchowk gateway, Charikot is the base for exploring the wider district. A short distance away in old Dolakha stands the historic Dolakha Bhimeshwor temple, one of the region's most revered shrines and an easy add-on to a Kalinchowk trip. The town also sits on the route toward Jiri and the Tama Koshi, making it a natural hub for onward eastern travel.
Getting up to Kuri
From Charikot the road climbs steeply and roughly to Kuri, the cable-car base. The journey takes a couple of hours and can be slow or difficult in winter snow, so many travellers hire a local jeep rather than drive themselves. See how to get to Kalinchowk for the full route and tips.
When to visit
Charikot is fine year-round as a transit town, but the surrounding mountain views are clearest in autumn, winter and spring. The monsoon brings cloud and a higher landslide risk on the hill roads. Time your stop to match your plans for the ridge above.
Good to know
- Services: Charikot has the area's banks, ATMs and shops — stock up here, as Kuri is limited.
- Onward transport: Switch to a local jeep for the rough road up to Kuri village.
- Nearby: Visit the historic Dolakha Bhimeshwor temple, and see how the town fits a full trip in the top things to do in Kalinchowk.
