Kalinchowk Cable Car

A short cable-car ride from Kuri lifts visitors toward the 3,842 m summit and the Bhagwati temple.

The Kalinchowk cable car is an aerial ropeway that lifts visitors from Kuri village up to a station near the 3,842-metre summit in Dolakha district, carrying them most of the way to the Bhagwati temple in just a few minutes. It is the single feature that turned Kalinchowk from a strenuous pilgrimage into Nepal's most accessible snow destination.

What to expect

The cable car climbs steeply from the Kuri base station over high pasture, rhododendron and — in winter — snow, with the ridge and the surrounding Himalaya opening up as you rise. The ride is short but scenic, and for many visitors it is part of the fun, especially children seeing snow for the first time.

It does not deliver you to the temple door. From the upper station a short, steep path and a flight of steps lead to the summit shrine; allow extra time for this final stretch, and take care in winter when the steps can be icy.

Why it matters

Before the ropeway, reaching Kalinchowk meant a long road journey and then a demanding uphill walk — a real pilgrimage. The cable car has opened the ridge to families, older visitors and non-trekkers, and it is the main reason day-trippers and snow-seekers now flock here in winter. It is a rare example in Nepal of a high, sacred summit made genuinely easy to reach.

Tips for riding

Queues can build on winter weekends and holidays, when crowds from Kathmandu come for the snow, so arrive early or, better still, stay overnight in Kuri and ride up at first light. Buy your ticket at the Kuri base station, carry small notes and warm layers, and remember that the weather at the top is far colder and windier than below.

When to ride

Service depends on weather and conditions; high wind or heavy snow can pause it. Clear autumn, winter and spring mornings are best — winter for snow, the shoulder seasons for the sharpest Himalayan views. Check conditions locally and plan your trip with how to get to Kalinchowk.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Kalinchowk cable car?+

It is an aerial cable car that runs from Kuri village up to a station near the Kalinchowk summit in Dolakha. It carries visitors most of the way to the 3,842-metre Bhagwati temple in minutes, replacing what used to be a steep uphill walk.

How long does the Kalinchowk cable car take?+

The ride itself takes only a few minutes, climbing from Kuri to the upper station near the summit. From there a short, steep path and steps remain to reach the temple, so set aside extra time for the final climb on foot.

Does the cable car take you all the way to the temple?+

Not quite. It carries you to a station close to the top, leaving a short but steep walk and a set of steps up to the Bhagwati shrine. In winter this final stretch can be icy, so wear shoes with good grip.

Is the Kalinchowk cable car good for families and elderly visitors?+

Yes. By removing most of the climb, the cable car makes the summit and its snow accessible to families with children and older visitors who could not manage the full trek. It is the main reason Kalinchowk is Nepal's most accessible snow spot.
