How to Get to Kalinchowk
How to reach Kalinchowk from Kathmandu — to Charikot, jeep up to Kuri, then cable car or walk to the summit.
Getting to Kalinchowk is an overland journey in two stages: first the road from Kathmandu to Charikot in Dolakha, then a rough climb up to Kuri village, from where the cable car or a short walk takes you to the summit temple. Allow most of a day, and ideally break the trip with a night in Kuri.
The short answer
Drive from Kathmandu to Charikot (around six to seven hours) east on the Araniko Highway and north into Dolakha, then take a local jeep up to Kuri (roughly two more hours on a rough road). From Kuri, ride the cable car or walk to the Bhagwati temple.
From Kathmandu to Charikot
Buses and jeeps run from Kathmandu to Charikot, the Dolakha district headquarters. The route heads east on the Araniko Highway before turning north on hill roads into Dolakha. It is paved most of the way but winding and mountainous, so journey times stretch, especially in the monsoon. A private jeep or car is faster and more flexible than the bus, letting you stop for food and views.
From Charikot up to Kuri
This is the demanding leg. The road from Charikot climbs steeply and roughly to Kuri, the cable-car base, and takes around two hours in good conditions. It is tricky in winter snow and monsoon mud, so most travellers hire a local jeep with a driver who knows the road rather than attempt it themselves. A high-clearance 4WD is essential.
The final climb
From Kuri the cable car carries you most of the way to the summit in minutes, leaving a short, steep walk and steps to the temple. Alternatively, hike the roughly one-to-two-hour trail up from Kuri through the high pasture.
Road conditions and seasons
The hill roads can be slowed by monsoon landslides (June to September) and by snow and ice in winter, the very season many come for. Travel by day, allow generous buffer time, and check the best time to visit Kalinchowk before locking in dates.
Practical tips
- Leave early: A morning start avoids arriving on mountain roads after dark.
- Carry cash: Buses, jeeps, the cable car and meals are cash-only; ATMs are in Charikot.
- Pack warm layers: It is mild in the valleys and cold on the ridge — the climate shifts sharply as you climb.
- Hire a local jeep for Kuri: The upper road is no place for an unfamiliar driver, especially in snow.
