Dhulikhel to Namobuddha Hike

A classic ridge walk from the Newar town of Dhulikhel to the sacred Buddhist hilltop of Namobuddha.

The Dhulikhel to Namobuddha hike is the most loved walk on the Kavre side of the eastern rim — a rolling ridge route from the Newar hill town of Dhulikhel to Namobuddha, one of Nepal's holiest Buddhist sites, crowned by a stupa and a great monastery. It blends mountain views, terraced farmland and deep pilgrimage atmosphere, and it is a highlight of our eastern valley rim hikes collection.

The short answer

Walk from Dhulikhel along the ridge to the Namobuddha stupa and monastery — about 10 to 12 kilometres over three to four hours one way. It is easy to moderate, with gentle ups and downs, and ends at a sacred hilltop. Many walkers extend the day by continuing to the old Newar town of Panauti and returning from there.

The route

From Dhulikhel (around 1,550 m) the trail climbs gently past the town's hilltop shrines and then follows farmland ridges southeast, with the Himalaya on the horizon on clear mornings. It passes through Kavre villages and pine groves, well used by pilgrims and walkers alike. The approach to Namobuddha rises to the stupa hill, where prayer flags and the gilded roofs of the monastery come into view.

Namobuddha

Namobuddha is one of the three great Buddhist pilgrimage sites of the Kathmandu Valley region, alongside Boudhanath and Swayambhunath. At its heart is an ancient stupa and, above it, the large Thrangu Tashi Yangtse monastery, home to many monks. A short climb leads to the hillside shrine marking the legend of the bodhisattva who gave his body to a starving tigress — for a fuller picture, see the guide to Namobuddha meditation and retreats.

Good to know

  • Start early for cooler walking and clearer mountain views.
  • Walk the stupa kora (clockwise) and dress modestly at the monastery.
  • Carry water, snacks and cash; tea shops are spaced out along the ridge.
  • Consider continuing to Panauti to round out a loop.

Combine it

This walk pairs naturally with a night in Dhulikhel for sunrise, and with the quieter Nala to Bhagwati hike on the Kavre side. For a higher viewpoint route instead, compare the Nagarkot to Chisapani hike. For more options across the region, see the best day hikes near Kathmandu.
