Easy Day Hikes Near Kathmandu
Gentle, low-climb valley walks like Nagarkot to Changu Narayan and the Chandragiri hilltop paths — beginner-friendly routes near Kathmandu.
The easiest day hikes near Kathmandu are the low-climb valley-rim walks — routes that mostly descend or stay level, follow well-trodden paths and finish in half a day. They suit beginners, families with older children and travellers acclimatising before a bigger trek. None requires real hill-walking experience, just water, sun protection and an early start. These are the gentle end of our day hikes near Kathmandu sorted by difficulty.
Nagarkot to Changu Narayan
The signature easy walk starts high on the ridge at Nagarkot and drops through farmland and Tamang villages to the ancient temple of Changu Narayan, one of the oldest Hindu shrines in Nepal. Because you begin at the top, it is mostly downhill — three to four hours of gentle walking with a Himalayan skyline behind you and a UNESCO-listed temple at the finish. Take a taxi or bus up to Nagarkot, walk down, and ride back from Changu Narayan.
Chandragiri hilltop paths
For the least effort of all, ride the Chandragiri Hills cable car to the 2,550 m summit and follow the short forest paths and viewpoint loops around the top. The Bhaleshwor Mahadev temple, picnic lawns and a wide valley panorama are all within a level stroll of the upper station, making this the most relaxed way to stand on the valley rim.
Shivapuri lower trails
You do not have to summit Shivapuri to enjoy it. From the Budhanilkantha gate of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, the lower forest trails toward the Nagi Gompa nunnery give you birdsong, shade and gentle gradients without the full climb to the peak. Pay the entry fee at the gate and turn back whenever you like — even an hour or two in this forest is rewarding.
Taudaha and the valley floor
If you would rather skip the hills entirely, the path around Taudaha Lake south of the city is flat, short and good for birdwatching, with the Chobar gorge nearby. It pairs well with the temples at Pharping for an easy, low-altitude day out.
Good to know
- Best time: Autumn (October to November) and clear winter mornings for the widest mountain views; start early before the haze builds.
- What to bring: Trainers, water, sun hat and a light layer — none of these walks needs boots or gear.
- Getting there: Taxis reach all the trailheads; agree a return fare or have the driver wait, as taxis back are scarce on the rim.

Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest hike near Kathmandu?+
The Nagarkot ridge down to Changu Narayan is the gentlest classic walk — it is mostly downhill, takes three to four hours, and ends at an ancient temple. The short forest loops around Chandragiri's hilltop are even easier since the cable car does the climbing for you.
Are easy hikes near Kathmandu suitable for beginners?+
Yes. These routes have little sustained climbing, follow well-used paths and can be walked in half a day with normal trainers, water and a hat. They are ideal for first-time walkers and for travellers acclimatising before a Himalayan trek.
Do I need a permit for easy hikes near Kathmandu?+
Most do not require a permit. The exception is anything entering Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, where a fee is collected at the gate. The Nagarkot to Changu Narayan walk and the Chandragiri hilltop paths have no permit, though Changu Narayan charges a small temple entry fee.
How long do easy Kathmandu hikes take?+
Plan on two to four hours of walking, leaving time for transport each way. The Nagarkot descent is the longest at three to four hours; the Chandragiri and Taudaha walks are shorter and can be done in an hour or two on the hill itself.
