Moderate Day Hikes Near Kathmandu
Half-day climbs like Champadevi and the Shivapuri forest trails — a few hundred metres of ascent through forest near Kathmandu.
Moderate day hikes near Kathmandu are the half-day forest climbs — routes that gain a few hundred metres over three to five hours, with some steep stretches but no technical ground. They reward everyday fitness with quieter trails and bigger views than the easy descents, and they make ideal warm-ups before a Himalayan trek. These sit in the middle of our day hikes near Kathmandu sorted by difficulty, a step up from the easy day hikes near Kathmandu.
Champadevi
A long-standing favourite among valley walkers, Champadevi (about 2,250 m) rises on the southern rim and is crowned by a small shrine shared by Hindus and Buddhists. The trail climbs through pine and rhododendron forest from Pharping or the Hattiban ridge, with the Kathmandu Valley and the southern Himalaya opening up as you gain height. It is a satisfying climb without the crowds of the headline trails and links onward along the ridge toward Bhasmasur.
Shivapuri forest trails
Inside Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park on the northern rim, the mid-level trails from the Budhanilkantha gate climb steadily through dense, bird-rich forest toward Nagi Gompa and the upper slopes. You can turn this into a moderate half-day by walking partway up before returning, leaving the full summit push for a tougher day. An entry fee is collected at the gate.
Nagarjun and Jamacho
The Nagarjun forest, the second block of the national park on the valley's northwest edge, holds the climb to Jamacho (about 2,128 m), topped by a Buddhist stupa and a viewpoint. From the Phulbari gate near Balaju it is a steady two-to-three-hour ascent through forest that is excellent for birds and the occasional deer. It is one of the most accessible moderate climbs from the city centre.

Frequently asked questions
What counts as a moderate hike near Kathmandu?+
Moderate routes climb a few hundred metres over three to five hours, mostly on forest trails with some steep sections. Champadevi, the Shivapuri mid-trails and Nagarjun's Jamacho are the classics — harder than the downhill Nagarkot walk but well short of a full Phulchowki ascent.
How fit do I need to be for a moderate Kathmandu hike?+
Reasonable everyday fitness is enough. You should be comfortable walking uphill for an hour or more at a time and carrying water and a layer. No technical skill is needed, just steady legs and an early start to finish before the afternoon cloud.
Do moderate hikes near Kathmandu need a permit?+
Champadevi from Pharping or Hattiban has no permit. Anything inside Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park — the Shivapuri forest trails and Nagarjun's Jamacho — charges an entry fee at the gate. Carry cash for the ticket.
How long does the Champadevi hike take?+
From the Hattiban or Pharping side, allow three to four hours up to the shrine on top of Champadevi and back, plus transport. It is a steady forest climb of several hundred metres with valley and mountain views opening as you gain height.
