Ichangu Narayan Hike

A sacred Vishnu temple in a quiet valley west of Swayambhunath, one of the valley's four Narayan shrines, on an easy walk.

Address
Ichangu Narayan, Chandragiri, Kathmandu

Ichangu Narayan is a sacred Vishnu temple tucked into a quiet, green fold of hills just west of Swayambhunath, and one of the Kathmandu Valley's four cardinal Narayan shrines. Reaching it on foot makes an easy, rewarding short hike — a gentle walk of about an hour through farmland and small villages to a pagoda temple that feels worlds away from the city, despite being close to its western edge.

The short answer

From the Swayambhunath or western Ring Road area, follow the quiet road and connecting paths roughly 3 to 4 km into the valley to Ichangu Narayan, about an hour on foot. The temple is a multi-tiered pagoda dedicated to Vishnu, set among terraced fields and is one of the four Narayan temples pilgrims visit across the valley. The walk is easy and family-friendly, making a relaxed half-day.

About the temple

Ichangu Narayan is a working Hindu shrine, busiest on festival days dedicated to Vishnu, when devotees gather to make offerings. The pagoda stands in a small courtyard ringed by smaller shrines and metalwork, and the setting — quiet farmland backed by the wooded Nagarjun and Chandragiri hills — is as much a draw as the temple itself. It is the western counterpart to the grander Changu Narayan in the east.

On the walk

The route leaves the bustle of the western city and quickly turns rural, passing through fields, brick houses and the occasional spring. The trail can also be linked with the wooded Nagarjun forest above, a former royal hunting reserve.

Combine with nearby sites

Because it sits below Swayambhunath, this walk pairs naturally with a visit to the Swayambhunath stupa itself, and with the boulders and forest of Nagarjun on the same hillside. To complete the Narayan circuit, add the cave shrine of Bishankhu Narayan in the valley's southeast.
