Kopan Hill Walk
A gentle stroll through fields above Boudhanath up to Kopan Monastery and valley views.
The Kopan hill walk is one of the gentlest and most contemplative nature escapes near Kathmandu — a short rise through fields and quiet lanes above Boudhanath to the hilltop Kopan Monastery, with its calm gardens, prayer flags and a Himalayan horizon on clear mornings. With little real climbing, it is an easy half-day outing that pairs spiritual atmosphere with green and fresh air just minutes from the city.
The route
The walk starts in the Boudhanath area of northeast Kathmandu, near the great white stupa. From there you head uphill on lanes that give way to terraced fields and scattered woodland, climbing gently for under an hour to Kopan Monastery on the crest of the hill. The grounds are open to respectful day visitors, and the monastery's gardens and viewpoints look out over the valley — Boudhanath below, the city beyond, and on a clear day the snow peaks to the north.
What to expect
- Kopan Monastery: A well-known Tibetan Buddhist monastery famous for its residential meditation and Buddhism courses; the calm grounds are the highlight of the walk.
- Gentle going: Mostly easy lanes and field paths with only modest climbing — ideal for a relaxed morning.
- Views and quiet: A surprising sense of countryside and stillness so close to one of Kathmandu's busiest pilgrimage sites.
Getting there
Boudhanath is about 20 to 30 minutes northeast of central Kathmandu by taxi, and Kopan hill rises just behind it. There is no permit, as the walk stays outside the national park; the monastery welcomes day visitors free of charge. Dress modestly, walk clockwise around shrines and keep noise to a minimum out of respect for those on retreat. The walk pairs beautifully with the flat Gokarna riverside walk nearby, and contrasts with the western-ridge Swayambhu to Halchowk hike. It is part of our collection of short nature escapes from Kathmandu.
Tips
Mornings are coolest and clearest for the mountain view; carry water and dress respectfully for the monastery. Combine the walk with time at the Boudhanath stupa for a full, restful half day.
