Swayambhu to Halchowk Hike

A short western-ridge walk from the Monkey Temple to the quiet Halchowk hilltop shrine.

The Swayambhu to Halchowk hike is a short, easy ridge walk on the western edge of Kathmandu that links the famous hilltop stupa of Swayambhunath — the Monkey Temple — with the quieter hill and shrine of Halchowk just beyond it. It is one of the simplest nature escapes in the city: a half-day outing that trades the temple crowds for open ridge, scattered forest and broad views back over the valley.

The route

Most walkers begin at Swayambhunath, climbing the 365 steps to the painted eyes of the stupa and the panorama over Kathmandu. From the temple hill the route heads west along the ridge, dropping through lanes and rising again toward Halchowk, a hill topped by a local temple on the city's western fringe. The walk mixes quiet residential roads with trail and patches of woodland, and the higher you go the wider the view becomes — the valley behind you and the green of the Nagarjun forest to the north.

What to expect

  • Swayambhunath: Best at sunrise, before the day-trippers arrive, when the monkeys and pilgrims have the hill to themselves.
  • Halchowk: A modest, local shrine and ridge-top with views rather than a major monument — the appeal is the quiet and the air.
  • Mixed terrain: Expect a blend of paved lanes and dirt trail; this is an urban-edge ridge walk rather than a wilderness route.

Getting there

Swayambhunath is only 10 to 15 minutes west of Thamel by taxi, making this the most accessible escape in the collection. Swayambhunath charges a small temple entry ticket; the Halchowk section is free, as the walk stays outside the national park. The route sits beside the Nagarjun short loop hike on the same northwestern rim, and contrasts nicely with the gentle Kopan hill walk on the opposite side of the city. It is one of our short nature escapes from Kathmandu.

Tips

Go early for sunrise views and to avoid both heat and crowds, carry water, and keep valuables secure around the monkeys at Swayambhunath. For more valley-rim options see the best day hikes near Kathmandu, and our getting around Nepal guide covers reaching the trailhead.
