Lakuri Bhanjyang Hike
Cross a ridge pass on the southeastern valley rim — pine forest, farmland and wide views toward the Himalaya.
The Lakuri Bhanjyang hike crosses a ridge pass on the southeastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, above the southern edge of Lalitpur. Set among pine forest and terraced farmland, the pass and the ridge above it open wide views over the valley on one side and, on clear mornings, a line of the Himalaya to the north. It is a relatively gentle, uncrowded outing and a well-known spot for sunrise close to the city.
The route
Lakuri Bhanjyang is reached by road and trail from the southern side of Lalitpur, under an hour from central Kathmandu, on the way toward Lubhu and the Panauti direction. Many walkers drive partway and stroll the ridge, while others climb from villages on the valley floor and descend the far side. The walking is gentle by valley-rim standards, and the route can be shortened to the pass or extended along the crest to further viewpoints. For reaching the start, see our getting around Nepal guide.
The view
The pass and ridge are prized for their sunrise, when the snow peaks to the north catch the first light and the valley lies in soft shadow below — it ranks among the gentler options in our best sunrise spots in Nepal guide. By day the outlook reaches across pine slopes and farmland to the valley rim and the mountains beyond, a quiet contrast to the busier headline viewpoints.
Why choose Lakuri Bhanjyang
The pass appeals to walkers who want mountain scenery without a strenuous climb. Because a road reaches close to the crest, it is one of the few valley-rim viewpoints you can enjoy with very little effort, which makes it popular for early-morning drives and short rambles rather than serious hikes. That accessibility, the pine-shaded ridge and the open Himalayan horizon on clear days have also made it a favourite picnic and photography spot for Kathmandu families on weekends. For a longer day, you can continue along the crest toward the Jhule and Okhreni villages, stringing together the quiet eastern-rim trails into a fuller ridge walk.
