Manichud Danda Hike

Climb the northeastern rim above the Newar town of Sankhu — forest, a hilltop pond and shrine, quiet views.

The Manichud Danda hike climbs a forested ridge on the northeastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, rising above the old Newar town of Sankhu. It is one of the quieter valley-rim walks — a half-day to moderate day through farmland and forest to a hilltop sacred pond and shrine, with open views over the valley and surrounding hills. For walkers tired of the crowds on Phulchowki and Chandragiri, it is a peaceful alternative steeped in local legend.

The route

The hike starts from Sankhu, about an hour by road from central Kathmandu on the valley's northeastern edge. From the town the trail climbs through terraced farmland and into forest, gaining the Manichud Danda ridge in three to five hours up. The upper paths are less waymarked than the popular trails, so a little route-finding — or a local guide — helps, and many walkers continue along the crest to further outlooks before returning.

The summit and its legend

The ridge top holds a sacred pond and a shrine set among the trees, tied to local Hindu tradition and visited by pilgrims, especially on festival days. The forest opens to outlooks over the valley and the green hills around, a calm reward after the climb. At the foot of the hill, Sankhu itself is well worth time — its great temple of Vajrayogini is one of the valley's important power-places; see our Sankhu Vajrayogini guide.

Pairing the hike with Sankhu

Few valley-rim hikes come with such a rewarding base town. Sankhu is one of the oldest Newar settlements in the valley, a former trading post on the route to Tibet, with brick-paved lanes, carved courtyards and the hilltop Vajrayogini complex above it. Walkers often start with a slow wander through the town, climb Manichud Danda for the morning, and return to explore the temples in the cooler afternoon. The combination of forest ridge, sacred pond and living Newar heritage makes Manichud one of the more characterful half-days on the northeastern rim, and a natural step toward the quieter eastern-rim trails.

Good to know

  • Quieter than the headline peaks — good for solitude and birdsong.
  • Upper trails are less waymarked; a guide or offline map helps.
  • Allow a full half-day, and start early for the clearest air.
  • Carry water and snacks; services thin out above Sankhu.
