Phulchowki Hike
Climb the Kathmandu Valley's highest peak above Godawari — forest, birdlife and a Himalayan view from the top.
The Phulchowki hike climbs the highest peak on the Kathmandu Valley rim — about 2,765 metres above the village of Godawari on the valley's southern edge — for dense forest, exceptional birdlife and, on the clearest mornings, a long Himalayan horizon from the shrine-topped summit. It is the most demanding of the valley's view hikes and, for many, the most rewarding. This pin covers the walk itself; for a car-based version of the outing, see our Phulchowki day trip guide.
The route
The trail starts near the Godawari Botanical Garden at the foot of the hill, roughly an hour from central Kathmandu. From here a walking path and a parallel rough motorable road both climb to the top, gaining over a kilometre of height through a striking sequence of habitats — scrub and degraded edge at the base, dense mossy broadleaf and oak-laurel forest in the middle, and rhododendron near the summit. On foot the round trip takes most of a day; many hikers walk up and arrange a vehicle down, or drive part way and walk the final stretch.
Forest and wildlife
Phulchowki holds the finest stretch of broadleaf forest near Kathmandu, and that vertical band of habitats packs in a remarkable wildlife list. It is the most accessible top-quality birding hill in the country, with well over 300 species recorded — laughingthrushes, minivets, sunbirds, warblers, woodpeckers and parrotbills among them, plus the endemic spiny babbler in the lower scrub. The lower slopes around Godawari are themselves a renowned birding patch.
The summit and view
The wooded top carries a small Mai (mother goddess) shrine and communication antennas. On a clear autumn or winter morning the trees frame a sweeping view north across the whole valley to the snow peaks; haze and afternoon cloud often close it, so the early start that birders favour also wins the best outlook.
Good to know
- Start early — both the views and the birds are best in the first hours, and the summit clouds over by midday.
- Carry water, snacks and warm layers; the top is cool even when the valley is warm.
- The road is rough and best in dry conditions — avoid it after heavy rain.
- Take all your litter back down to keep the forest pristine.

Frequently asked questions
How high is Phulchowki?+
Phulchowki rises to about 2,765 metres on the southern rim above Godawari, making it the highest point ringing the Kathmandu Valley. The forested summit carries a small Mai shrine and communication antennas, and on clear mornings it opens a wide view across the valley to the Himalaya.
How long is the Phulchowki hike?+
On foot the climb from near the Godawari Botanical Garden gains over a kilometre of height and takes most of a full day up and down, around six to eight hours. A rough motorable road also reaches the top, so many walkers hike up and arrange a vehicle for the descent.
Is Phulchowki good for birdwatching?+
Yes — it is Nepal's most accessible top-quality birding hill, with well over 300 species recorded across its habitat zones, from scrub at the base to mossy oak forest near the summit. Spring is best for active forest birds and the rhododendron bloom.
When is the best time to climb Phulchowki?+
Spring (March to May) brings flowering rhododendrons and vocal forest birds, while clear autumn and winter mornings give the sharpest mountain views. Avoid the monsoon, when the road is muddy and leeches are common, and start early before the summit clouds over by midday.
