Khaptad Baba Ashram
The meditation hermitage of the sage Khaptad Baba, at the spiritual centre of the Khaptad plateau.
The Khaptad Baba Ashram is the spiritual centre of the Khaptad plateau — the meditation hermitage of Khaptad Baba, the revered ascetic who lived and worshipped here for around half a century. Set among the open patan meadows, the ashram is a simple, contemplative place rather than a grand temple, and it is the reason Khaptad is known as the spiritual heartland of far-western Nepal. A visit here is the heart of any trip to Khaptad.
Who was Khaptad Baba
Khaptad Baba, also known as Khaptad Swami, was an ascetic and scholar said to have meditated on the plateau for roughly fifty years in the twentieth century. Drawn by the quiet, the springs and the open meadows, he made the highland his retreat, and his teachings and presence gave Khaptad its enduring religious significance. The national park, established in 1984, was created in part to protect this spiritual landscape along with its ecology.
What to expect
The ashram is a modest cluster of buildings and meditation grounds at the centre of the plateau, close to the Tribeni confluence and within easy walking distance of the Sahasra Linga. There is little ornament — the appeal is the atmosphere of stillness, the meadows around it and the sense of a place set apart from the world. Pilgrims and the occasional traveller come through, but for much of the year it is profoundly quiet.
Treat the ashram as the living sacred site it is. Walk softly, keep your voice low, dress modestly and follow local custom on footwear and photography. Combining the ashram with the nearby shrines makes a gentle, reflective half-day — the core of our Khaptad pilgrimage sites collection.
Good to know
- Respect: This is an active hermitage; keep noise and litter to a minimum and ask before photographing people.
- Pair it with: Walk on to the Tribeni confluence and up to the Sahasra Linga for the full sacred circuit.
- Wider context: Place the ashram in the national picture with spiritual Nepal and Hinduism in Nepal.
