How to Get to Lumbini

Lumbini sits in Nepal's southern Terai near the Indian border, so you can arrive by air, by road from elsewhere in Nepal, or overland from India. Here's how each option works, and what to expect once you're on the way.

The short answer

The fastest route is to fly to Gautam Buddha International Airport at Bhairahawa, then take a 30-minute taxi to Lumbini. Coming from elsewhere in Nepal, you'll usually arrive by bus or private car along the Terai highways. From India, most travellers cross the border near Bhairahawa and continue the short distance north.

By air

Domestic flights connect Kathmandu and Pokhara to Bhairahawa (Gautam Buddha International Airport), the closest airport at about 30 minutes' drive from Lumbini. Flying is by far the quickest way in — it turns what would be a long overland day into under an hour in the air, which is worth considering if your time in Nepal is tight.

Book your onward taxi at the airport, or have your hotel arrange a pickup in advance; drivers meet arriving flights and can take you straight to the sacred grounds or your accommodation. Domestic schedules in Nepal shift with the season and the weather, so treat flight times as flexible and leave a buffer before any onward connection.

By road from Pokhara or Chitwan

From Pokhara, the drive is roughly 6–8 hours by tourist bus or private car, following the highway south and then west across the plains. Tourist buses are the budget-friendly choice and usually set off in the morning; a private car costs more but lets you keep your own pace and stop along the way.

From Chitwan, it's a shorter run west along the Terai highways — a natural next leg if you're pairing a jungle safari with your visit to Buddha's birthplace. Roads across the Terai are mostly flat, but journey times still hinge on traffic and roadworks, so build in extra time rather than banking on the fastest estimate.

By road from Kathmandu

Coming direct from Kathmandu, expect a full day on the road or an overnight bus, as the route winds out of the hills before dropping onto the plains. Many travellers break the trip in Pokhara or Chitwan rather than doing it in one push, which is both more comfortable and a better use of the journey. If time matters more than budget, the short flight to Bhairahawa is the easier call.

From the Indian border

The Sunauli/Belahiya crossing near Bhairahawa is about an hour from Lumbini, making it a common first or last stop for travellers moving between India and Nepal. Many arrive overland from Gorakhpur in India, crossing on foot at the border before picking up onward transport. Complete your immigration formalities on both sides of the crossing, and keep your passport and any visa paperwork within easy reach.

Getting from the airport or bus park

However you arrive, the final leg is short. Taxis and local buses connect Bhairahawa with Lumbini, and most hotels can arrange a pickup if you tell them your timing. Once you reach Lumbini itself, the monastic zone is spread out but flat, so cycling or a hired rickshaw is the easiest way to move between the temples and the sacred garden.
