Address
Tangbe, Upper Mustang, Gandaki Province

Tangbe (also spelled Tangbbe) is one of the first villages of Upper Mustang, strung along the Kali Gandaki a short way north of Kagbeni. Stepping into it is the moment many travellers feel they have truly entered the restricted kingdom: a tight maze of whitewashed houses banded in red and black, set among apple orchards and barley fields below a wall of jagged, wind-carved red cliffs.

What to expect

Tangbe's signature is its three-coloured architecture — white walls trimmed with red and black, the colours associated with the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism that prevails across Mustang. The houses crowd together along narrow lanes, with chortens, mani walls and a small gompa among them, while irrigated terraces of buckwheat, barley and apple orchards spread out toward the river. Behind the village rises an extraordinary eroded ridge of red and grey pinnacles, one of the most photographed backdrops in Lower Upper Mustang.

The village is small and most travellers pass through rather than stay, but even a short stop rewards you with a sense of the region's distinctive building tradition and farming life. It pairs naturally with the medieval gateway village of Kagbeni just south, and sets the tone for the bigger sights ahead at the walled city of Lo Manthang. On the route north

As an early stop on the Upper Mustang trek, Tangbe marks the transition from the relatively green, accessible Muktinath valley to the stark desert kingdom beyond. Trekkers walking the classic route pass through here on the first day or two north of Kagbeni; those using jeep support roll through on the rough valley road. Either way, it is worth slowing down for.

Good to know

  • Altitude: Tangbe sits around 3,000m; you are still climbing toward Lo Manthang, so pace yourself and read our altitude sickness in Nepal guide.
  • Access: Tangbe is inside restricted Upper Mustang — you need the special permit and a licensed guide. See our Upper Mustang permits and access guide.
  • Etiquette: Ask before photographing people and homes, and keep to the lanes; these are working farming households.
  • Plan around it: See where it fits among the Upper Mustang highlights and the wider Mustang hub.

Tangbe is a perfect first taste of Upper Mustang's villages — colourful, compact and wholly distinctive, framed by some of the most dramatic eroded scenery on the whole route north.
