Nagarkot Itinerary

Ready-made one and two-day Nagarkot plans built around sunset, sunrise and the ridge hikes.

Nagarkot is an easy overnight escape from Kathmandu, and a little planning turns it from a quick photo stop into a proper mini break. This Nagarkot itinerary lays out a relaxed one-night plan and a fuller two-day version, both built around the two things the ridge does best: sunset and sunrise.

The short answer

For most people, the ideal trip is one night: arrive in the afternoon for sunset, stay over, watch sunrise, then take a short walk before heading back. With more time, add a second day for a ridge hike to Changu Narayan or Dhulikhel. Before you go, check the best time to visit Nagarkot so you land on clear skies.

One night, the classic plan

Afternoon: Leave Kathmandu after lunch — see the Kathmandu to Nagarkot route for transport — and check into an east or west-facing hotel by mid-afternoon.

Evening: Walk out to a Nagarkot sunset point or up to the Nagarkot View Tower for the golden hour, then enjoy an early dinner.

Pre-dawn: Rise about an hour before first light, layer up, and head to the ridge or tower for the famous sunrise — follow our Nagarkot sunrise guide for timing.

Morning: After breakfast, take a gentle stroll along the ridge before checking out.

Two days, the relaxed plan

Run Day 1 exactly as above. On Day 2, after sunrise and breakfast, set off on a ridge hike. The easy, mostly downhill Nagarkot to Changu Narayan hike ends at Nepal's oldest temple and lets you continue into Bhaktapur. If you want a bigger walk, the longer Nagarkot to Dhulikhel ridge hike follows the valley rim to a second hill town.

Good to know

  • Book east or west-facing rooms so you can watch the light from your terrace.
  • Pack warm layers for dawn and dusk, even in summer.
  • Build in a buffer for traffic and fog on the ridge road, especially in the afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Nagarkot?+

One night is enough for most visitors: arrive in the afternoon for sunset, stay over, and catch sunrise the next morning. Add a second day if you want to hike down to Changu Narayan or along the ridge to Dhulikhel before heading back.

What is the ideal one-day Nagarkot plan?+

Arrive mid-afternoon, settle into your hotel, walk to a sunset point or the view tower for the evening light, have an early dinner, then rise before dawn for sunrise. After breakfast, take a short ridge walk before driving back to Kathmandu or on to Bhaktapur.

Is Nagarkot a good day trip from Kathmandu?+

It can be done as a long day trip for the view tower and a hike, but you would miss both sunset and sunrise, which are the main reasons to come. An overnight stay is strongly recommended to get the full experience.

What should you do on a second day in Nagarkot?+

Use the morning for a ridge hike — the easy downhill walk to Changu Narayan temple or the longer route to Dhulikhel — and end at a UNESCO site or hill town from where transport runs back to the valley.
