Nagarkot sunrise is the reason most travellers make the trip up from Kathmandu. From the ridge — and especially the view tower — the dawn light sweeps across the Nepal Himalaya, and on the clearest mornings the Everest range appears as distant peaks far to the east.

How to do it

Either watch from your east-facing hotel terrace or walk up to the Nagarkot View Tower for the widest outlook. Arrive before first light, as the colours peak in the minutes before the sun appears.

Good to know

  • Bring a warm layer — the ridge is cold before sunrise even when the days are mild.
  • Skies are clearest in autumn and spring; cloud is common in the monsoon.
  • Make a morning of it by linking sunrise with a ridge hike toward Changunarayan, then settle in at one of the best hotels in Nagarkot.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to watch sunrise in Nagarkot?+

The Nagarkot View Tower at the top of the ridge gives the widest, most open panorama. Many east-facing hotels also have excellent outlooks, so you can often watch sunrise from your own terrace without walking up.

What time is sunrise in Nagarkot?+

It varies by season — roughly 5:15–6:45 am. Arrive 20–30 minutes early to settle in and watch the peaks light up before the sun clears the horizon, and check the forecast the night before for clear skies.
