Bardia National Park
Nepal's largest, wildest Terai park in the remote far west — the country's top spot to track wild Bengal tigers.
Bardia National Park is the largest and wildest protected area in Nepal's lowland Terai — a remote expanse of sal forest, grassland and river islands in the far west, and the country's premier destination for tracking wild Bengal tigers. Established as a wildlife reserve in 1976 and upgraded to a national park in 1988, it draws a fraction of Chitwan's crowds, which is exactly its appeal.
Location and landscape
The park covers roughly 968 square kilometres in Bardiya district, bordered to the west by the broad Karnali River. It is a patchwork of dense sal forest, riverine jungle, open grassland (locally called phanta) and the rich Babai Valley deep inside the park. The headquarters and main visitor base sit at Thakurdwara.
Wildlife and scenery
Bardia's star is the Bengal tiger, present in one of Nepal's densest populations, and the low visitor numbers make sightings more rewarding than anywhere else in the country. It also protects greater one-horned rhinos (reintroduced here from Chitwan), wild elephants, swamp deer, sloth bears, leopards, gaur and the rare Gangetic dolphin in the Karnali. With over 400 bird species, including the Bengal florican and sarus crane, and gharial and mugger crocodiles in the rivers, it is a full-spectrum wilderness. The Babai Valley, ringed by forest and with no permanent settlement, is one of the most pristine corners of the entire Terai, and herds of wild elephants still move freely through it.
Why visit
Travellers come for the tigers and the solitude. Multi-day tiger tracking on foot, jeep safaris and river trips define the experience, with knowledgeable local guides who read pugmarks and alarm calls to position you near the cats. Many visitors sit out long, patient riverside vigils for the chance of a sighting. For lodges, river rafting, dolphin spotting and Tharu culture in the gateway village, see the Bardia destination hub.
How to get there
The fastest route is a one-hour flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then a two-to-three-hour drive to Thakurdwara. Long-distance tourist buses also serve the region from Kathmandu and Pokhara. Because it is far west, factor in a full travel day each way.
Best time to visit
October to April brings dry, pleasant weather, with the best tiger sightings from February to May when grasses are short and animals concentrate near shrinking water sources. The hot, wet monsoon from June to September makes wildlife viewing harder and some tracks impassable.
Permits and fees
A national park entry permit is required, bought at the park office in Thakurdwara, with daily rates highest for foreign visitors and lower for SAARC and Nepali nationals. Jeeps, guides and river activities are charged separately. Carry your passport and arrange licensed guides through registered operators.
Conservation note
Bardia is central to Nepal's tiger recovery, which has seen the national wild tiger count roughly triple in a little over a decade through anti-poaching work and habitat protection. The reintroduction of rhinos here also spreads conservation risk across multiple parks. Visitors help by keeping to ethical jeep and walking safaris, supporting buffer-zone homestays and never disturbing wildlife.
Bardia is the heart of far-western wildlife travel. Pair it with the neighbouring Banke National Park, contrast it with accessible Chitwan National Park, or explore the full national parks of Nepal collection.
Frequently asked questions
Where is Bardia National Park?+
Bardia National Park is in the far-western Terai of Nepal, in Bardiya district on the Karnali River, west of Nepalgunj. The usual base is the village of Thakurdwara near the park headquarters.
Can you see tigers in Bardia?+
Yes — Bardia is Nepal's best park for spotting a wild Bengal tiger, thanks to a healthy tiger population and very few visitors. Sightings are never guaranteed, but multi-day tiger tracking on foot or by jeep offers a genuine chance.
How do you get to Bardia National Park?+
Most visitors fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then drive two to three hours northwest to Thakurdwara. Overland tourist buses from Kathmandu and Pokhara also reach the area, though the journey is long.
What is the best time to visit Bardia?+
October to April is best, with the clearest tiger sightings from February to May as the grass thins and animals gather near water. The monsoon from June to September is hot, wet and harder for wildlife viewing.
