Chuchemara Danda Viewpoint

The highest point in Rara National Park at 4,087m, with the grandest panorama over Rara Lake.

Chuchemara Danda is the highest point in Rara National Park, a ridge rising to about 4,087m on the southern shore of the lake. Where Murma Top gives the easy, classic view, Chuchemara is the grand, hard-won panorama — a strenuous climb that pays off with the finest overview of Rara Lake anywhere in the area.

What to expect

The trail climbs steeply from the lakeshore at around 2,990m, gaining over a thousand metres through dense pine, spruce and juniper forest before emerging onto open ridge. From the summit the entire deep-blue lake lies far below, framed by the surrounding park and, on clear days, the far-western Himalaya stretching toward Mugu and Jumla. It is a long, demanding full day, so an early start and steady pace are essential.

Where Murma Top gives an intimate, top-down view from the northern shore, Chuchemara reveals the bigger landscape: the full extent of the lake set within its forested bowl, with row upon row of far-western ridgelines fading into the distance. The forest on the way up is some of the most pristine in the park, and quiet walkers occasionally find tracks or signs of its shy wildlife — the same pine and fir habitat that supports red panda and Himalayan musk deer.

The hike

This is the toughest day-walk at Rara. From the lakeshore the path rises relentlessly through thick forest, then onto exposed ridge for the final stretch to the high point near 4,087m. Allow a full day, set off at first light, and budget extra time for the descent, which is hard on the knees. Carry plenty of water, food and warm, windproof layers, as conditions on the open ridge can change quickly and the summit is markedly colder than the shore.

Because of the altitude and the steep, partly unmarked forest trail, a local guide is strongly recommended — both for navigation and for safety in a remote area with no quick help at hand. Acclimatise first by spending a day or two at lake level and walking the easier Murma Top before attempting Chuchemara. The reward is the grandest panorama in Rara and a genuine sense of standing on the roof of the park.
