Helambu with Gosaikunda Trek
Combine gentle Helambu with the sacred Gosaikunda lakes over the high Laurebina La pass.
Combining Helambu with Gosaikunda turns a gentle cultural walk into a full high-altitude trek, linking the Hyolmo villages of Helambu with the sacred alpine lakes of Gosaikunda over the Laurebina La pass at around 4,610 metres. It is one of the most rewarding ways to join two highlights of the Langtang region in a single itinerary, pairing low-altitude culture with serious mountain scenery. It is the standout extension within the Helambu trekking and Hyolmo culture cluster.
The route
Most trekkers begin gently in Helambu, walking up through the ridge villages on the standard Helambu trek circuit and Helambu trek itinerary. From around Tharepati the route climbs north to the Laurebina La, crossing to the chain of holy lakes at Gosaikunda, then descends toward Dhunche in the Langtang valley. The trek can also be walked in reverse from Dhunche down into Helambu — see the companion route Gosaikunda to Helambu trek.
Why combine them
The appeal is contrast. Helambu offers monasteries, apples and forest at modest height; Gosaikunda offers a string of sacred glacial lakes set in stark alpine terrain at over 4,300 metres, a major pilgrimage site during the Janai Purnima festival. Walking from one to the other in a single trek gives you both the cultural richness of the Hyolmo villages and the high-mountain grandeur of the lakes.
Altitude and difficulty
This is a demanding trek. While the Helambu side is easy, the crossing of the Laurebina La is a genuine high pass, and the climb to over 4,600 metres carries a real risk of altitude sickness. Build in acclimatisation days, ascend gradually, and never rush the pass. Good fitness, warm gear and a licensed guide are essential.
Permits and timing
You need the Langtang National Park permit and a TIMS card, with a licensed guide required for the high crossing. The trek is best in autumn and spring, when skies are clear and the pass is open; it can be snowbound and hazardous in winter. For the full lake circuit and onward options, see our national Gosaikunda trek guide, and plan beds and access with where to stay in Helambu and how to get to Helambu.
Frequently asked questions
How do you combine Helambu with Gosaikunda?+
You link the two by crossing the Laurebina La pass, at around 4,610 metres, which connects the Helambu ridges with the sacred Gosaikunda lakes in Langtang National Park. Trekkers usually walk up through the Hyolmo villages, cross the pass to the lakes, and descend toward Dhunche or Sundarijal.

How high and hard is the Laurebina La pass?+
The Laurebina La reaches about 4,610 metres, making the combined trek a genuine high-altitude undertaking with real risk of altitude sickness. The Helambu side is gentle, but the crossing to Gosaikunda is demanding and should not be rushed.
When is the best time for the Helambu Gosaikunda trek?+
Autumn (October to November) and spring (March to May) are best, with clear skies and an open pass. The Laurebina La can hold snow and become dangerous in winter and the shoulder months, so check conditions before attempting the crossing.
