How to Get to Helambu from Kathmandu
By jeep, bus or private car via Melamchi, or on foot from Sundarijal — how to reach Helambu.
Helambu is one of the closest mountain regions to Kathmandu, reached entirely by road or on foot — there is no domestic flight. The gateway is Melamchi Pul Bazaar, about 70km northeast of the capital, from where rough mountain roads climb to the ridge villages. Here is how to get there, with timings and the best options.
The short answer
The simplest route is a private jeep or car to Tarkeghyang or Sermathang via Melamchi, roughly five to seven hours depending on road conditions. Budget travellers take a bus or shared jeep to Melamchi and change there. Trekkers can skip the drive entirely and walk in from Sundarijal.
By private jeep or car
A hired jeep is the most comfortable choice, going directly to the village. The lower road to Melamchi is paved, but the climb up to the ridge is rough and best suited to a 4WD, especially after rain. Agree the fare and route before setting off.
By bus and shared jeep via Melamchi
The cheapest option runs in two legs: a local bus or shared jeep from Kathmandu to Melamchi Pul Bazaar, then an onward jeep up to the villages. It is slow and crowded but inexpensive, and best done in daylight.
On foot from Sundarijal
The classic Helambu trek circuit starts on foot from Sundarijal on the edge of the Kathmandu Valley, so you can walk into the region without the long drive — one of the few major treks you can begin almost from the city. This approach trades a rough jeep ride for a few extra days of beautiful ridge walking through Chisapani, Kutumsang and Thadepati, and it lets you arrive in the Hyolmo villages slowly and on your own feet, which many trekkers find far more satisfying than bouncing up the road.
Getting around once you arrive
Within Helambu there is no public transport between the ridge villages, so you either walk the gentle trails or arrange a private jeep where the rough road allows. The classic and most enjoyable way to move between Sermathang and Tarkeghyang is on foot, a few hours along a scenic forested ridge. A local guide or your lodge can help arrange transport for the longer transfers down to Melamchi.
When to go
Roads are roughest in the monsoon (June to September), when landslides can block the climb. The best months for road travel are the dry autumn and spring, when the surface is firmer and journeys are more predictable.
