Patan & Lalitpur Guide
The valley's finest Newar city — the Patan Museum, Golden Temple, Mahabouddha, Kumbeshwar and metalwork lanes, with a route for a perfect day in Lalitpur.
Patan — officially Lalitpur, the "city of beauty" — is the Kathmandu Valley's finest Newar city, just across the river from the capital yet a world calmer. It packs the country's best museum, a dazzle of hidden temples and living craft workshops into a compact, walkable old town.
The short answer
Cross the river to Patan, about 30 minutes from Thamel, and centre your day on Patan Durbar Square. Visit the superb Patan Museum, then walk to the gilded Golden Temple, the terracotta Mahabouddha, the five-storey Kumbeshwar Temple and the metalwork lanes. Families can add the Central Zoo at Jawalakhel. Tap any pin below for full details.
A perfect day in Patan
Start with the heritage core on Patan Durbar Square, then step into the Patan Museum to learn how to read the valley's sacred art. From the square it is a short walk to the glowing Golden Temple at Hiranya Varna Mahavihar and the spire of the Mahabouddha Temple, studded with a thousand Buddhas. Loop north to the soaring Kumbeshwar Temple and its sacred ponds, and weave through the metalwork and Newari craft workshops that have made the city famous. Travelling with children? The Central Zoo at Jawalakhel is an easy, popular addition.
