Khumjung & Khunde Day Hike
An acclimatization loop from Namche to the twin Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde beneath sacred Khumbila.
The Khumjung and Khunde day hike is the gentlest and most culturally rich of Namche's acclimatization walks, and a perfect answer for a rest day. It loops up to the plateau at around 3,790m, where the twin Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde sit beneath the sacred peak of Khumbila, then returns to sleep low in Namche — useful height gain wrapped in a real glimpse of mountain village life.
The route
The classic loop climbs first to the Syangboche ridge, often taking in the Everest View Hotel acclimatization hike for its panorama, then drops onto the plateau into Khumjung. From there a short walk reaches quieter Khunde before the descent back to Namche on the lower trail. The gradients are kind by Khumbu standards, which makes this an easy, scenic way to gain height without exhausting yourself.
Khumjung
The larger village, Khumjung is famous for the Khumjung school, founded by Sir Edmund Hillary in 1961, and for its monastery, said to hold a relic linked to the yeti legend. Stone houses, potato terraces and prayer-flag lanes give a genuine sense of how Sherpa families live at altitude.
Khunde
A short walk on, quieter Khunde is home to the Khunde Hospital, established by Hillary's Himalayan Trust in 1966 to serve the Khumbu's communities. It sees fewer trekkers and rewards a slow, respectful visit. For the place-by-place detail of both settlements, see the dedicated Khumjung and Khunde villages page, and read more about the people in our guide to Sherpa culture in Namche.
Good to know
- Altitude: Around 3,790m on the plateau — ideal for climb-high, sleep-low.
- Respect: These are working villages and a living monastery; visit quietly and ask before photographing people.
- Khumbila: Sherpa belief forbids climbing the sacred peak above; admire it from below.
This walk is a cornerstone of the Namche acclimatization and day hikes collection and our Namche acclimatization day plan. Review altitude sickness in Nepal before going higher, see the wider Everest region treks, and start from the Namche Bazaar travel guide for the overview.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the Khumjung and Khunde day hike?+
Done as a loop from Namche, allow about four to six hours including time in the villages. Many trekkers combine it with the climb to the Everest View Hotel and Syangboche, making a full but rewarding acclimatization day before sleeping low again in Namche.
How high are Khumjung and Khunde?+
Both villages sit at around 3,790m on the plateau above Namche Bazaar, beneath the sacred peak of Khumbila. The gentle height gain from Namche at 3,440m makes the loop excellent acclimatization while staying close enough for an easy return.
What is the best route for the loop?+
Most trekkers climb to the Syangboche ridge and Everest View Hotel first, drop onto the plateau to Khumjung and then quieter Khunde, and descend back to Namche on the lower trail. Walking it this way gains height early and gives the best views before midday cloud.
Is the Khumjung day hike suitable for acclimatization?+
Yes, it is one of the best. The gradual climb to around 3,790m, time spent at altitude in the villages, and the return to sleep low in Namche follow the climb-high, sleep-low principle that helps prevent altitude sickness on the way to Everest Base Camp or Gokyo.
