Everest View Hotel Acclimatization Hike

A height-gaining climb from Namche to the Everest View Hotel terrace, the classic acclimatization day walk in the Khumbu.

The acclimatization hike from Namche Bazaar up to the Everest View Hotel at Syangboche is the single most popular rest-day walk in the Khumbu, and the answer to most trekkers' acclimatization question. You climb roughly 440m from Namche at 3,440m to the hotel terrace at around 3,880m, gain your first wide view of Everest, then descend to sleep low — the textbook climb-high, sleep-low pattern that prepares your body for the heights ahead.

The route

From Namche the trail switchbacks steeply up the bowl's northern wall, passing the small Syangboche airstrip (around 3,780m) on the ridge. From there a short climb reaches the hotel, whose open terrace and restaurant frame Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam. The walk is short in distance but unrelenting in gradient at the start, so take it slowly — at this altitude the climb, not the kilometres, is what tires you.

Why it works for acclimatization

Gaining height during the day stimulates your body to adapt, while sleeping back down in Namche keeps the night's altitude moderate. The Everest View Hotel hike is perfectly placed for this: enough climb to count, close enough to return easily. For the underlying physiology and warning signs, read altitude sickness in Nepal before you set out, and never push higher while symptoms are worsening.

Make it a loop

Most trekkers extend the walk into the full ridge circuit. From the hotel you can drop onto the plateau to the Sherpa villages on the Khumjung and Khunde day hike, or take in the lower Everest View Point day hike on the way up or down. For the static-place details of the hotel itself, including its history as one of the world's highest hotels, see Hotel Everest View at Syangboche.

Good to know

  • Timing: Go early; mornings are clearest before cloud rolls in over the peaks.
  • Pace: Slow and steady on the steep initial climb, with plenty of water.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the hike to the Everest View Hotel from Namche?+

Allow about one and a half to two hours of steady climbing up from Namche to the hotel at around 3,880m, plus time on the terrace. Most trekkers turn it into a half to full day by looping on to Khumjung and Khunde before descending back to Namche to sleep low.

How much altitude do you gain on this hike?+

You climb from Namche at 3,440m to roughly 3,880m at the Everest View Hotel, a gain of about 440m. That is ideal acclimatization ground for the climb-high, sleep-low rule, as long as you return to Namche to sleep rather than overnighting up high too soon.

Can you see Everest on this acclimatization hike?+

Yes. The hotel terrace and the ridge along the way open a classic panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam on a clear morning. Set out early, before mid-morning cloud builds over the peaks, for the best chance of an unobstructed view.

Do you have to be a hotel guest to visit?+

No. Day visitors are welcome at the restaurant and terrace for tea, coffee or a meal. Most trekkers walk up purely for the view and the height gain, then descend to sleep lower in Namche rather than staying overnight at altitude.
