Namche Acclimatization Day Plan

A practical rest-day schedule for Namche — when to hike, when to rest, and how to climb high and sleep low safely.

The short answer: spend your Namche rest day with a height-gaining morning hike, an afternoon of rest and food in town, and a night back at Namche's altitude — the proven climb-high, sleep-low routine. Namche Bazaar at 3,440m is where almost every Everest trekker takes their first acclimatization day, and a well-structured plan turns that pause into the foundation of a safe, successful trek.

Morning: climb high

Set out early while the peaks are clear. The standard choice is the Everest View Hotel acclimatization hike to around 3,880m, looped through the Sherpa villages on the Khumjung and Khunde day hike. This gains useful height, gives you the Everest panorama, and returns you to town by early afternoon. If you have a second rest day, the longer Thame valley day hike is the quieter alternative.

Afternoon: rest and refuel

Back in Namche, the afternoon is for genuine recovery. Eat a proper meal even if your appetite has dipped, drink plenty of water, and rest rather than pushing on. This is also the ideal time for the town's culture: visit the Sagarmatha National Park visitor centre on the ridge, learn about the region's people in our guide to Sherpa culture in Namche, and if it is a Saturday, take in the haat covered in our Namche Saturday market guide.

Evening: sleep low

Sleep at Namche's altitude, not higher. Avoid alcohol and sleeping pills, which can mask or worsen altitude problems, and keep warm and well-hydrated. A poor night's sleep is common at this height; persistent headache, nausea or breathlessness at rest are warning signs to take seriously.

When to move on

Only continue once you feel well and have completed a full rest day. The natural next stage is the Namche to Tengboche day hike. Before you climb on, read altitude sickness in Nepal carefully so you can recognise symptoms in yourself and others.

Good to know

  • Two nights minimum in Namche; add a third for safety if you can.
  • Active rest beats total rest for acclimatization, unless you have symptoms.
  • Hydrate and eat, avoid alcohol, and never sleep higher than your day's start.

This schedule ties together the Namche acclimatization and day hikes collection. See the wider route in our guide to the Everest region treks, and start from the Namche Bazaar travel guide for the town overview.

Frequently asked questions

What does a typical Namche acclimatization day look like?+

Most trekkers hike up in the morning to the Everest View Hotel and Khumjung while it is clear, return to Namche by early afternoon to rest, eat well and rehydrate, and sleep at the town's altitude. Gaining height by day and sleeping low is the whole point of the schedule.

Should I rest completely or hike on my acclimatization day?+

An active rest day with a moderate height-gaining hike acclimatizes you far better than lying still. Doctors recommend climbing higher during the day, then descending to sleep. Only rest completely if you already have symptoms of altitude sickness, in which case do not ascend at all.

How many acclimatization days do I need in Namche?+

At least one full rest day, meaning two nights in town, is standard before continuing toward Everest Base Camp or Gokyo. Adding a second day for the Thame valley or a slower pace is wise if you feel the altitude or want a gentler, safer ascent overall.

What should I avoid on a Namche rest day?+

Avoid alcohol, sleeping pills and over-exertion, and do not sleep significantly higher than Namche. Drink plenty of water, eat well even if appetite drops, and watch for headache, nausea or poor sleep. If symptoms worsen, do not climb higher until they settle.
