Thame Valley Day Hike

A quieter acclimatization hike west of Namche into the Thame valley, a traditional Sherpa valley of gompas and trade history.

The Thame valley day hike is Namche's quiet alternative for acclimatization — a walk west off the main Everest highway into one of the most traditional Sherpa valleys in the Khumbu. The village of Thame sits at around 3,800m, about three to four hours from Namche along the Bhote Koshi, on the historic trade route toward the Nangpa La pass into Tibet. You gain height gently by day and return to sleep low in Namche, making it ideal for a second rest day away from the crowds.

The route

Rather than the steep climb of the Everest View ridge, the Thame trail contours and undulates above the Bhote Koshi valley, passing mani walls, chortens and small Sherpa settlements with the peaks of Kongde Ri and Thamserku in view. Because it leaves the busy Lukla–Everest Base Camp corridor, you share the path mostly with locals and the occasional Gokyo or Renjo La trekker.

Thame village and monastery

Thame is one of the Khumbu's oldest villages and a deeply traditional one. Its hillside gompa, set above the village, is among the region's most atmospheric, and the valley has produced some of Nepal's most celebrated Sherpa mountaineers. The strong climbing and trading heritage here is part of the wider story told in our guide to Sherpa culture in Namche.

Why hike it for acclimatization

The day's moderate height gain to around 3,800m, combined with a return to sleep low in Namche, follows the climb-high, sleep-low principle perfectly. Its length makes it a fuller workout than the Khumjung loop, so it suits a second acclimatization day once you have already done the Khumjung and Khunde day hike or the Everest View Hotel acclimatization hike. As always at altitude, read altitude sickness in Nepal before setting out.

Good to know

  • Altitude: Around 3,800m at Thame — climb high, sleep low in Namche.
  • Time: A full day return; start early and carry water and snacks.
  • Quiet trail: A licensed guide is recommended on this less-travelled route.

The Thame walk rounds out the Namche acclimatization and day hikes collection and fits the slower version of our Namche acclimatization day plan. Place it in the bigger picture with our guide to the Everest region treks, and start from the Namche Bazaar travel guide.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Thame valley day hike from Namche?+

Thame lies about three to four hours' walk west of Namche, so a return day hike takes most of a day, roughly six to eight hours including breaks. Many trekkers turn back partway if they only want a half-day, since the valley rewards even a shorter out-and-back.

How high is Thame?+

The village of Thame sits at around 3,800m, a similar height to Namche's other acclimatization destinations. The trail undulates above the Bhote Koshi rather than climbing relentlessly, so the day is more about distance and gentle height gain than a single steep ascent.

Why visit the Thame valley?+

Thame is one of the most traditional corners of the Khumbu, set on the old trade route toward the Nangpa La pass into Tibet. It has an ancient hillside monastery, far fewer trekkers than the main trail, and a strong Sherpa mountaineering heritage as the home of several famous climbers.

Is the Thame hike good for acclimatization?+

Yes. The valley walk gains useful height while staying at a moderate altitude, and you return to sleep low in Namche, following the climb-high, sleep-low rule. Its quietness also makes it a relaxing alternative to the busy Everest View ridge on a second rest day.
