Namche to Tengboche Day Hike

The classic next stage of the Everest trail from Namche to Tengboche Monastery, with Ama Dablam framed above the forest.

The Namche to Tengboche day hike is the classic next stage of the Everest trail, and the natural step once your Namche acclimatization is done. It leads from Namche at 3,440m to Tengboche Monastery at around 3,860m, the spiritual heart of the Khumbu, with one of the most famous mountain views in Nepal waiting at the top. Most trekkers walk it as a trek stage and sleep at Tengboche or Deboche rather than returning, because of the big descent and climb along the way.

The route

The day begins with a gentle, scenic ridge traverse from Namche, with Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam opening ahead. The trail then drops steeply to the Dudh Koshi at Phunki Tenga (around 3,250m), where water-powered prayer wheels turn beside the river. From there comes the day's main effort: a long, steady climb through rhododendron and fir forest up to the monastery ridge at Tengboche. It is a demanding stage precisely because of this descent-then-climb profile.

Tengboche Monastery

Set on a high saddle, Tengboche is the largest and most important monastery in the Khumbu, rebuilt after fire and earthquake and still the religious centre of Sherpa Buddhism in the region. The afternoon prayer ceremony, the resident monks, and the panorama of Ama Dablam, Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse make it unforgettable. For the full place detail and the monastery's history, see the dedicated Tengboche Monastery page.

Acclimatization first

Because Tengboche sleeps higher than Namche, you should already have completed a proper rest day before this stage — ideally the Everest View Hotel acclimatization hike and the Khumjung and Khunde day hike. Follow our Namche acclimatization day plan to schedule it, and read altitude sickness in Nepal before climbing on.

Good to know

  • Profile: Big drop to Phunki Tenga, then a long climb to 3,860m.
  • Start early: Aim to reach Tengboche for the afternoon prayer ceremony.
  • Sleep: Most trekkers overnight at Tengboche or quieter Deboche.

This stage links the Namche cluster to the high trail and features in the Namche acclimatization and day hikes collection. See where it leads in our guide to the Everest region treks, and start from the Namche Bazaar travel guide for the overview.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the hike from Namche to Tengboche?+

Most trekkers take five to six hours from Namche to Tengboche, covering the steady ridge traverse, the steep drop to the Dudh Koshi at Phunki Tenga, and the long climb up through forest to the monastery at around 3,860m. Starting early leaves time for the afternoon at the gompa.

How much altitude do you gain and lose?+

The day is famous for its big descent and climb. You contour from Namche at 3,440m, drop sharply to about 3,250m at Phunki Tenga by the Dudh Koshi, then climb back up to Tengboche at around 3,860m. The net gain is modest but the up-and-down makes it a tiring stage.

Is Namche to Tengboche an acclimatization hike or a trek stage?+

It is usually the next stage of the Everest Base Camp or Gokyo trek rather than a day return, since most trekkers sleep at Tengboche or nearby Deboche. Strong, well-acclimatized walkers occasionally do it as a long out-and-back, but sleeping higher is the normal plan.

What is there to see at Tengboche?+

Tengboche is home to the Khumbu's largest and most important monastery, set on a ridge with a celebrated view of Ama Dablam, Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse. The afternoon prayer ceremony is a highlight, and the surrounding rhododendron and fir forest is beautiful in spring.
