The Perfect Chitwan 2-Day Itinerary

Two well-paced days in Chitwan — a jeep safari, a river canoe, a jungle walk and a Tharu cultural evening.

Two well-planned days are enough for a memorable first safari in Chitwan, Nepal's most famous lowland national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trick is to combine land and water on day one — a jeep safari and a Rapti River canoe — then add a slower jungle walk and a Tharu cultural evening on day two. Base yourself in Sauraha on the park's eastern edge.

The short answer

Day 1: an early jeep safari into the core forest in search of one-horned rhino and deer, then a Rapti River canoe trip past basking gharial crocodiles. Day 2: a guided jungle walk and a riverside sunset, finishing with an energetic Tharu cultural show.

Day 1: jeep safari and river canoe

Start at dawn with a jeep safari deep into Chitwan National Park, the best chance to spot the greater one-horned rhinoceros grazing in the grasslands, along with spotted deer, wild boar, monkeys and, with great luck, a Bengal tiger or leopard. In the afternoon, drift downriver on a traditional dugout canoe along the Rapti, gliding past mugger and gharial crocodiles and a wealth of waterbirds. Close the day watching the sun set over the river from the Sauraha bank.

Day 2: jungle walk and Tharu culture

Set out on a guided jungle walk with an experienced naturalist, learning to read tracks, alarm calls and the forest at ground level — a quieter, more intimate counterpoint to the jeep. Spend the late morning at the elephant or gharial breeding centre, or birdwatching along the buffer zone. In the evening, watch a Tharu cultural show, where the famous stick dance celebrates the Indigenous community of the Terai plains.

Good to know

  • Base: Stay in Sauraha for easy access to operators and the river.
  • Book ahead: Reserve the jeep safari and park permit the day before.
  • Best season: October to March for cool, dry, comfortable wildlife viewing.
  • Bring: Binoculars, neutral clothing, sun protection and insect repellent.

How it fits your trip

Chitwan slots neatly into a wider Nepal trip between the mountains and the cities. Many travellers pair this safari with a fast capital stop on the Kathmandu 1-day itinerary at the start, or come down to the plains after the high desert of the Jomsom-Muktinath itinerary. For a deeper, more flexible plan, see the full Chitwan itinerary, and read up on the park's habitats and wildlife in the Chitwan National Park guide. This two-day plan is part of the broader regional and city itineraries cluster. Time your safari with the best time to visit Nepal, and plan the drive or flight with getting around Nepal.

Frequently asked questions

Is two days enough for Chitwan?+

Two days is enough for a satisfying first safari. You can fit a jeep safari into the core forest, a Rapti River canoe trip, a guided jungle walk and a Tharu cultural show across two days. It is a tight but rewarding window; a third day adds birdwatching, a breeding centre or a quieter community-forest visit.

What animals can I see in Chitwan in two days?+

Chitwan is best known for the one-horned rhinoceros, which is commonly seen, plus wild elephants, deer, monkeys, gharial and mugger crocodiles and abundant birdlife. Bengal tigers and leopards live in the park but are rarely seen. A jeep safari and a river canoe give the best odds over two days.

How do I get to Chitwan and where do I base myself?+

Most visitors base in Sauraha on the park's eastern edge, reached by a roughly five-hour drive or a short flight to Bharatpur from Kathmandu or Pokhara. Sauraha sits beside the Rapti River with easy access to safari operators, the visitor centre and Tharu villages.

When is the best time for a Chitwan safari?+

October to March is the most comfortable, with cooler, drier weather and good wildlife viewing. Late winter and spring, when grasses are cut and shorter, improve sightings. The monsoon (June to September) is hot and humid with high rivers, though the jungle is lush and birdlife is rich.
