Pokhara on a Rainy Day: Indoor Ideas
Mountain Museum, caves and waterfalls, cosy cafes and meditation halls — what to do in Pokhara when it rains.
Pokhara catches more rain than almost anywhere in Nepal, but it is also one of the best Nepali towns for a wet day, with museums, caves, cosy cafes and meditation halls all within easy reach. When the clouds settle over Phewa Lake and the mountains vanish, here is how to fill the day under cover — and even enjoy the rain.
The Mountain Museum
Top of any rainy-day list is the International Mountain Museum on the southern edge of the city. Its large halls cover the world's great peaks, the history of Himalayan mountaineering and the cultures of Nepal's mountain peoples, and you can comfortably spend two to three hours inside. It is the single best indoor activity in Pokhara and perfect for a wet morning.
Caves and waterfalls
Rain actually improves Pokhara's water features. The plunge of Davis Falls roars at its fullest in and just after the monsoon, and the sacred underground Gupteshwor Mahadev cave across the road shelters you from the downpour while you explore its chambers and Shiva shrine. To the north, the limestone Mahendra cave makes another partly covered stop. Wear shoes with grip, as the floors get slippery.
Cafes and Lakeside
Pokhara's Lakeside is built for slow, rainy afternoons. The Lakeside cafes — many with lake views, books and good coffee — are ideal for waiting out a shower, and our Pokhara cafes guide maps the best of them. A long lunch and a book by a steamed-up window is a fine way to spend the wettest part of the day.
Slow down and reflect
Rain is a natural cue to slow down, and Pokhara is a wellness hub. The city's meditation centres offer indoor sessions, and sound-healing and yoga classes run whatever the weather. A calm indoor hour is a restorative use of a grey afternoon.
When the rain eases, switch to the after-dark options in our things to do in Pokhara at night guide, or browse the full Pokhara and Chitwan by mood collection for other plans. To avoid the wettest months altogether, check the best time to visit Nepal before you book.
Frequently asked questions
What is there to do in Pokhara when it rains?+
Pokhara has more wet-weather options than most Nepali towns. You can spend hours at the International Mountain Museum, explore the covered cave systems at Gupteshwor and Mahendra, settle into Lakeside cafes, join a meditation or sound-healing session, or wander the sheltered lanes of the Old Bazaar. A rainy day is easy to fill indoors.
Is the Mountain Museum a good rainy-day option?+
Yes — the International Mountain Museum on the edge of Pokhara is one of the best indoor activities in the city, with large halls on Himalayan peaks, mountaineering history and the cultures of Nepal's mountain peoples. You can easily spend two to three hours there, making it ideal for a wet morning or afternoon.
Can you visit the caves in Pokhara in the rain?+
The caves are partly sheltered, so they suit a rainy day, though the waterfall at Davis Falls and the linked Gupteshwor cave are most dramatic in or just after the monsoon when water levels are high. Wear non-slip shoes, as cave floors and steps can be wet and slippery whatever the weather outside.
When is Pokhara's rainy season?+
Pokhara is one of the wettest cities in Nepal, and its monsoon runs roughly from June to September, with heavy afternoon and overnight downpours. Mornings can still be clear, so plan outdoor sights early and keep these indoor options ready for when the clouds and rain move in later in the day.
