Things to Do in Pokhara at Night

Live-music bars, lakefront dinners, a floodlit island temple and stargazing — how to spend a night in Pokhara.

Pokhara after dark is centred on Lakeside, the lively strip along Phewa Lake where live-music bars, lakefront restaurants and rooftop lounges keep the evening going. It is the most relaxed nightlife in Nepal — more about a band, a lake breeze and a long dinner than a late club — and it pairs naturally with a floodlit island temple and some of the country's clearest night skies. Here is how to spend an evening.

Lakeside after dark

The action concentrates on Pokhara's Lakeside strip, where the promenade comes alive once the sun drops behind the hills. Bars and restaurants line both the lake-facing and inland sides of the main road, many with live bands playing covers and Nepali rock. Our Pokhara nightlife guide details the kinds of venues — from quiet lakefront tables to busier music bars — and how to find the atmosphere you want without naming a single overhyped spot.

Dinner by the water

Many of Lakeside's restaurants open onto the water or up to rooftops with mountain silhouettes, and a slow lakefront dinner is the classic Pokhara evening. After eating, walk the promenade — it stays busy and well-lit — and look out across the lake to the floodlit Tal Barahi temple on its island, its lights reflecting on the still water. It is one of the prettiest free sights in town after dark.

Music and a drink

Live music is Pokhara's signature night out. Bands start in the mid-evening and play through to closing, and because the venues sit so close together you can drift between them on foot to find the right sound. Pokhara closes earlier than Kathmandu, so think of the night as an unhurried crawl rather than a late one — dinner, a band or two, and a final lakeside stroll.

Look up

Away from the brightest part of the strip, Pokhara's night sky is a draw in itself. On clear nights the stars over the lake are excellent, and the quieter western end of the promenade or a rooftop with the lights down gives you a fine view. If you would rather end the night calmly, this stargazing is the perfect counterpoint to the bars.

Frequently asked questions

Does Pokhara have nightlife?+

Yes — Lakeside is the centre of Pokhara's after-dark scene and the liveliest tourist nightlife in Nepal outside Kathmandu's Thamel. The strip along Phewa Lake fills with live-music bars, rooftop lounges and restaurants, most clustered within an easy walk of each other so you can move between them on foot.

What time does Pokhara's nightlife close?+

Pokhara is relatively early by city standards. Most Lakeside bars and live-music venues wind down by around 11pm to midnight under local guidelines, though weekends and high season can run a little later. Plan for an evening that starts with dinner and music rather than a late club night.

Is Pokhara safe at night?+

Lakeside is generally safe and well-lit, with plenty of people about until late, and walking between venues along the main strip is normal for visitors. As anywhere, keep to lit areas, watch your belongings in busy bars, and arrange a taxi if you are heading away from the central promenade.

Can you see the temple lit up at night?+

The island Tal Barahi temple in the middle of Phewa Lake is floodlit after dark and makes a striking sight from the Lakeside promenade, its reflection shimmering on the water. Boats out to the island generally run in daylight, so the after-dark experience is best enjoyed from the shore.
