Free Things to Do in Pokhara
Walk Lakeside, hike to Sarangkot and the Peace Pagoda, and roam the Old Bazaar — Pokhara's best no-cost days.
Pokhara is one of the easiest places in Nepal to fill a day for free, because its biggest draws — the lake, the mountains and the hilltop viewpoints — cost nothing to enjoy. Walk the Phewa Lakeside promenade, climb to a ridge for the Annapurna sunrise, and roam the centuries-old Old Bazaar, and you have a full, memorable day without a single ticket. Here is how to string the best no-cost experiences together.
Start with the lake
The heart of any free day is Phewa Lakeside, where a long paved promenade traces the eastern shore. At dawn and dusk the Annapurna range and the fishtail peak of Machhapuchhre mirror in the water, and the walk past lakefront gardens and small shrines is free from end to end. You will pay only if you choose to take a boat out to the island Tal Barahi temple, so simply walking and watching keeps the day costless.
Climb for the view
You do not need a paraglider or a jeep for Pokhara's famous panoramas. The classic Sarangkot sunrise ridge is free to reach on foot, with open viewpoints looking over the lake to the Himalaya. On the lake's southern side, the forest trail up to the World Peace Pagoda has no entry fee, and the white stupa rewards you with one of the best free views in the city. Both are early-morning missions worth the climb.
Roam the Old Bazaar
For culture without a ticket, head to Pokhara's Old Bazaar, the historic Newari trading street north of Lakeside. Its traditional brick houses, courtyards and the free-to-enter Bindhyabasini temple hilltop shrine give a glimpse of the working town behind the tourist strip. It is quieter, more local and entirely free to explore on foot.
Walk the lakeside loops
If you want more time outdoors, Pokhara's western shore opens into farmland and quiet trails. The free walking routes around Pame and the lake's far bank make an easy half-day, and the city's day hikes and walkable areas guide maps several that need no transport or fee. Carry water, start early, and you can stitch together hours of walking for nothing.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free thing to do in Pokhara?+
Walking the Phewa Lakeside promenade at sunrise or sunset is the single best free experience — the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre peaks reflect in the still water, and the paved path runs for several kilometres past gardens and small temples. Climbing the ridge to Sarangkot for dawn is the close runner-up and also free to reach on foot.
Can you hike to the World Peace Pagoda for free?+
Yes. The World Peace Pagoda above the southern shore of Phewa Lake has no entry fee, and the forest trail up from the lakeside is free to walk. You only pay if you choose to take a boat across the lake to reach the trailhead; walking the longer route from Lakeside costs nothing.
Are Pokhara's temples free to visit?+
The main temples are free to enter, including Bindhyabasini in the Old Bazaar, the Bhadrakali temple and the island Tal Barahi shrine — though the boat out to Tal Barahi is paid. You can also wander the historic Old Bazaar's shrines and traditional Newari houses at no cost.
Is Sarangkot sunrise free?+
Reaching Sarangkot on foot is free, and there is no charge for the open ridge viewpoints. Some private viewing decks and cafes ask a small fee, and a taxi or shared jeep up costs money, but the classic sunrise panorama of the Annapurnas can be enjoyed without paying anything if you walk.
